I think you should be glad that you have a home and can even have a dog.

You're right, what was I thinking.

Sorry to hear you are having these problems, Petunia, but unfortunately, insurance companies have the right to refuse insurance to anyone for any reason, and at any time.

They are in the business of making money. Period.

Thanks, AS. I know they can, that's why I'm so sad and panicked. If we can't get insurance I guess we'll have to give the house to the bank because I'm not getting rid of my boo. Homeowner's insurance problem

Homeowner's insurance problem

Life sure sucks when it is all about "money," doesn't it?

I'm sure you will be able to find a company willing to insure you. Unfortunately, you may not save any money in the process.

Is this just a problem in Florida, with the insurance and dogs?? Just curious? Guess I best read the policy on my son's house...
Oh dear, this might mean the guys renting the basement that have a pit bull may have to move?? oh dear... smilen

I sure hope you find an insurance company, Petunia. I know when I moved from my house and rented a townhouse, I was required to have my German Shepherd insured, which was extra on the renters insurance. But this doesn't help you as you are a homeowner...I am not even sure even when I was a homeowner, if dogs were ok or not... this is all very interesting.. Wish I could be of more help

No, radio. It's a problem in most states. I know there are a few that have passed a law (I think it was a law) banning breed discrimination, but it's only a few.

I was going to suggest State Farm, because we've had good luck with them, but we're in the mid-West, not Florida. The stuff that came up when I Googled State Farm for Florida didn't sound so good. Can you go back to your old carrier, even though it costs more money?

Does this mean that you cant get home insurance if you have a dog? And is it allowed for a company to take pictures of your house when you are not around?

Sounds like a real nightmare

The problem with that is they are under the same umbrella and have this info now, because the new company was able to match pictures of our roof from last year to this year. Homeowner's insurance problem

There is a list of dogs they deem "dangerous." Because my dog "looks" like one, they are refusing to insure us.

Some here have seen pictures, does she look dangerous?

unforutnately, here in the states, if your dog bites someone, it's your homeowner's insurance that usually pays the bill.

i've seen pictures of your dog {{{{{{{{Petunia}}}}}}}}} and she looks like she might lick you to death, if that's a danger Homeowner's insurance problem

(((( Petunia ))))

I'm so sorry about this. It's absolutely rediculous what insurance companies can get away with now.

Could you maybe get a roofer to come and look at your roof (really should be a few). Maybe it wont need to be replaced totally, and they will just need to make some repairs.

And as far as your dog. She is little!! And she is so sweet looking. I doubt she would even hurt a mouse.

We have two coming Monday and one on Tuesday.

They have a roofer's statement from last year stating the roof was good for another 3 to 5 years. But they don't care. Homeowner's insurance problem

Petty,

Here is the situation in a nutshell --- the dog isn't the biggest issue at hand for cancellation ... It is the roof

The dog that are listed if u read are most used for Home protection ie German Shepards , Rotties -- there is a greater risk for someone being bitten on your property -- mosy insurance companies can write an " rider" to the policy that will refuse liability if the dog has bitten someone

The LARGE issue is the roof --- with the Hurricane Barrelling down upon us the roof has to be able to withstand the winds ..if not the insurance see that the house is subject to higher exposure ...

The bigger issue is that In Florida most of the bigger companies are pulling out of the region cos the recent losses caused by the hurricanes ...

Furthermore my advice is for you to contact the Department of Insurance to get a list of carriers that are insuring in your region .

I know for a fact that the DOI and the Gov of Fl is attempting to enact a law trhat if a carrtier pulls out of Fl ( at least for property damage ) they lose all right to sell auto and other lines

Petunia ,

U might need to go with carrier Like State Farm or ALLSTATE but neverless the roof maybe an issue -- Internet coverage is also an option some carriers will not do an inspection if u can show them the paperwork upfront ....

But the risk is always higher of cancellation down the line

Petty,

Also how do u know that the roof wasn't damaged in the last storms that hit the State of Florida -- might be covered by the other policy ????

Food for thought

Thanks TYMBER,

We are prepared to put a new roof on, we knew it was coming so it's no surprise. We were really just holding out as long as we could.

We had two roofers come out today to give us estimates, and one tomorrow.

Our insurance agent told us the dog was the biggest issue and we should think about getting rid of her because we would find it extremely difficult to get insurance.

We have been trying to obtain quotes from other carriers all day.

Will keep our fingers crossed.

Thanks again for the info. Homeowner's insurance problem

I would contact the State Insurance Board...out of Tallahassee... Homeowner's insurance problem Gulliver used to be head of it, then Crist, then ??? And tell them what the insurance company is requiring (a new roof) even when you have a document stating it's good for now.

Also, you can contact AAA, or any one of the other 468 companies writing homeowner's peril insurance. See the State listing here : http://www.fldfs.com/Data/CompanySea...ow_results.asp

You can often get a quote online, esp since you know what you were carrying before (all their jargon words.)

I know in Miami Dade County that Pitt Bulls are illegal, and thus you won't get insured there. Broward county is trying to do the same regarding the dog.

Don't mention a dog when you ask for a quote. Don't mention the roof, but if they do add the document.

Get a 6 month policy if that's all they will cover you for, at least that's the season, and will give you time to work things out. Like I said, I prefer AAA as they go do the looking and comparing for me, and won't go with any insurance company that is a risky business already. Homeowner's insurance problem

I did hear from them on mine, and they have agreed to increase my coverage (finally they understand) to what it would take to rebuild the house in today's market. I was $60k below (I knew I couldn't rebuild if it burned Homeowner's insurance problem) Now I will be able to. They're sending the form to sign to my T's so I'll have it tomorrow. _Sky, you won't believe this. AAA just called and I told them my husband recently contacted them and they said they weren't writing in FL.

They said no they weren't but they have companies that will write the policy. I said great, who are they?

Are you ready for this one?

Citizens. Can you even believe it? Homeowner's insurance problem

PS We have a network of people calling us with info about their carriers. Hub's talking to someone right now who's company is "sympathetic" to the dog issue. Grr.

No, AAA isn't an insurance company, they are an independent writer...finding the best companies for their member's needs. Here is my insurer through AAA : Tower Hill Preferred. They sent me a letter stating they aren't writing in FL but then they just sent me a renewal policy Homeowner's insurance problem so I guess someone in Tallahassee convinced them otherwise? 800 342 3407 They're out of Gainesville. www.THIG.com

good wishes.
