My white dog, Kelley, has discovered she can climb the wire mesh fence I placed over the vinyl picket fence (which she was breaking thru0. I spliced and strung the electric wire shocker fence around this area this morning, only to discover she had jumped the fence even with the shock in place. She was gone all day, and I finally found her this evening, out roaming, without the shock collar. Someone had removed it! I found another collar at the Tractor Supply store for $75 which i had to put on my credit card, came home, removed the wire mesh fence, restrung the electric fence around the pickets, tested the collar (which is working), and placed the collar on Kelley. She is sulky and even mean to my Golden Retriever pup, Henry, this evening. I am disgusted.
I honestly feel that if she escapes again, I'll have to get rid of her.

Patty, I have found that "runners" aren't worth keeping if their space is in the city. They're gonna run no matter what or behave and turn mean as if you had them tethered on a short line.

I've had two that did that. One was an Anatolian that thought the whole 10 mile long and 5 mile wide canyon was her territory including all the horses and cattle. Neighbors didn't like her trying to herd all of the cattle into one central location. LOL The sad part about it is she hung herself when I tried to contain her. Bad dog day...

I had another one that was perfectly content staying on our 7 acres but when we sold the property, my daughter took her to N. Calif with her... to a large city lot, but it wasn't enough for Nakita. Every day when the family came home, Nakita was gone and they had to go looking for her. The last time she took off, I told my daughter she could stop looking for her after three days. Bad dog day... I half-way expected her to show up in the canyon but no one ever called me that they had seen her.

The dog I have now, I honestly couldn't tell you what she'd do if she wasn't an inside dog. She's gotten away from me a couple of time and wound up getting hit by a car. Now she won't go near the gate that she got out from, though. LOL She might stay inside the park now, but I don't trust her and I love her too much to take the chance.

Good luck with your dog. Bad dog day...

My uncle had a part husky part wolf (where he got that dont ask me) and he wasnt allowed to get any other dog due to the wolf side in his first one...his name is Duke...and my uncle lived in this house in a neighborhood in the city....and after the 7th time of getting out and away was when my uncle decided to sell him....sometimes its more humane to give your dog up to an area more sutable to their instincts....in my uncles case...he just wasnt thinking...i mean having a part wolf in the city? i think not...i mean you had to be really careful with this dog...one time i turned my back on him (big no no) and he thought i was challenging him and ended up attacking me.....sorry lost in memory....sorry for the unrelated memory....hope your dog doesnt run away again
love, inny

Thanks all of you for your insightis into this wayward dog!
By removing the wire mesh, rigid 4 ft high inside the picket fence whcih she was breaking, and placing the electrick fence there, it seems to have contained her, at least for the night!. She was doing this several times a day, venturing further and staying out longer each time, like a bad child! I feel I'm practicing "tough love" with the shocker fence, but I also know she's pondering her next move! I've had Kelley for 8 or more years, and this just started recently, actually BEFORE I got the golden pup, who is now bigger than Kelley, who thinks herself the alpha dog, as Henry (golden) is beginning to overtake her in play, etc, is goofy, sweet, clumsy and lovable! Not sure what I'll do next time IF she breaks out!
Thanks again!

i thought that you had the wire fence that they actually touch. that is what worked with mine. they didn't have a collar. it actually shocked them, when they touched it. nose, leg, butt......anywhere. and i tied white rags on the wire, so it was highly visible to them.......now i can just put a wire up and tie a white rag on it and bingo! that's all it takes.

even horses and cows learn the old white rag trick quickly. Bad dog day...
