I got an XM radio yesterday and I'm listening to the songs from the 50's, Frank Sinatra, etc. :-) and tripping on some of the music because of either memories or it causing me to think of certain subjects, people, regrets, and the like.

Do you think it is better to be reminded of "sad" things or keep away from things that remind you?

I don't listen to Nirvana anymore because it reminds me of some bad stuff that happened and brings back flashbacks, and if it's on the radio I just switch it off.

I know where you coming from with that Perna.

I havent been able to listen to a radio in the past two years, cause when i do i'm triggered from the flashbacks. In the first month after the storm, the radio and cell phone were the only two modes of communication and information for me. I've tried a few times to listen to the radio, but it always happens. Them darn flashbacks.

For me staying clear of the radio is best. But, as far as the cell phone. Thats a bit more difficult. I have found that leaving the ringer off at all times and only the vibrate mode on, I dont experience as many flashbacks.

I really hope your able to work through your memories, so that your able to enjoy your new radio.

hugs,
chalmette

As long as you don't wallow in the sadness, I don't see anything wrong with it. It's normal to have regrets, etc, but usually thinking of them brings back thoughts of the person too. I find it bittersweet, I guess -- sad that the person isn't in my life anymore, but glad that I knew them and appreciative of their contributions to my life, whether good or bad, because they helped make me who I am now.

But, that's just me, and it's probably stupid. Music and flashbacks

"At Seventeen ~ Janis Ian

I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
And high school girls with clear skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired
The valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
Were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth...

And those of us with ravaged faces
Lacking in the social graces
Desperately remained at home
Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say "come dance with me"
And murmured vague obscenities
It isn't all it seems at seventeen...

A brown eyed girl in hand me downs
Whose name I never could pronounce
Said: "Pity please the ones who serve
They only get what they deserve"
The rich relationed hometown queen
Marries into what she needs
With a guarantee of company
And haven for the elderly...

So remember those who win the game
Lose the love they sought to gain
In debitures of quality and dubious integrity
Their small-town eyes will gape at you
In dull surprise when payment due
Exceeds accounts received at seventeen...

To those of us who knew the pain
Of valentines that never came
And those whose names were never called
When choosing sides for basketball
It was long ago and far away
the world was younger than today
when dreams were all they gave for free
to ugly duckling girls like me...

We all play the game, and when we dare
We cheat ourselves at solitaire
Inventing lovers on the phone
Repenting other lives unknown
That call and say: "Come on, dance with me"
And murmur vague obscenities
At ugly girls like me, at seventeen. . .
