my boyfriend and i are moving back to ohio next july once our lease is up. i was thinking that, since i will probably lose some credits, i might as well finish out fall sem. but not go back for spring and just work to save up money. my financial aid has been disbursed to my account but it wont be paid out until mid-january to pay off my tuition and fees. but i was wondering, if i dont go back for spring, and they take my financial aid disburse it to other people, i dont have to pay back my aid from fall do i? as long as i dont take a year off school ill still be on my moms insurance so thats fine. and i know you have to pay back loans 6 months after you stop school but by then ill be enrolled and registered at Miami so I will be back at school. has anyone else had something like this?

If you aren't enrolled in spring, you don't get financial aid. If the financial aid for fall has already been applied to your account, and you're taking classes, it's over and done with and they can't take it back. But you WILL have to repay it along with however else much you've taken out once you're out of school for 6 months.

Or, you can be like me and stay in forbearance till you die. I don't recommend it. question about quitting school

ok thats what i was thinking. i didnt think they could take it back but i jsut wanted to make sure. ill be back in school by august so my loans wont be a problem. theyll still be deferred until i graduate.

just makes more sense to not attend and work my *** off to have extra money when we move than to stay in school and not be able to work and save up money for the u-haul and everything.

thanks for the info. im going to talk to my financial aid office tomorrow just to make sure.

I don't know when your semesters start/finish. If you're not moving until July, that's 6 months and there's no guarantee that you'll be "established" in a new school by then? That would trigger the 6 month rule and confuse heck out of getting more/paying back or not, etc.?

I would see if whatever school you want to go to in Miami has any online/distance ed classes and get enrolled in school and taking at least one class with/without the aid for Spring, online, so you can get back into full time and aid when you need to and will know the ropes, etc.

Yes Candybear and Perna both have great ideas...I've had the same thoughts--it would be nice to take the time off, but the Financial Aid will cut you short if you do.

i asked my brother and he said that his got cut short because he went to summer school so it was the opposite. i called the fafsa phone number and asked the woman if i would have any repercussions and she said its on an individual basis but since im not going back to SIU it wont matter.

but damn does Miami make it difficult to prove that Im a resident of Ohio. I have to get copies of my dad's drivers license, deed to his house proving he bought it in ohio, voter registration and tax return showing im dependent.

but this is what i dont get.... to fafsa im not independent til im 24. my parents havent claimed me for 2 years b/c they cant. but that makes me independent. how the hell does that work? im independent according to the school b/c my parents dont claim me on taxes but fafsa says im dependent until im 24. i hate these people lol

i went down and cancelled my fin. aid today at the fin. aid office. my mom said that i would be cancelled from her health insurance for not being a full time student but i thought you had to be out of school for a year before they cancelled you. well i think im just going to print out a page that shows im full time for spring before i drop my classes that way if they ask she can just send them that. they never do follow ups or check up with the school or anything so i should be good on spring sem. for health insurance.

and something i found out - i have been paying for insurance! i guess the school just kinda tacked health insurance on my bill and now its too late to prove that i already had it and get a refund of my 250 bucks. oh well. if i do get cancelled from my moms insurance i can always get it through the school.

Schools automatically do insurance for all students; I don't think you can get a refund; they're in a bizarre place where they have to make sure the students are covered, doesn't matter if you have secondary health insurance or not.

I'm quite positive the insurance company knows if you are in school and/or can check. If something happens, you could get in big trouble that way, financially or health insurance way. If you aren't in school you can't pretend you are, that's fraud and they could drop your parents too; don't mess with insurance companies!

I was going to warn you to be sure you are all set for Miami before you do anything rash up there. Miami is a thriving university and is just too big and busy and popular to waltz in and sign up. I think it's kewl that you've already been accepted though!

Don't do anything until you absolutely have to , when it comes to ending what you have already. question about quitting school

i have already been there. an advisor called and i asked her about reapplying and she said "once a student always a student" i just had to go online and fill out a re-enrollment thing to put that Im going to the Oxford campus.

i know, im not usually a fraud kind of person lol. i have lots of issues with hormone problems including ovarian cysts, uterine polyps etc... so health insurance is a pretty big part of my life. but as i was looking through my financial aid it says i have access to all student health services across campus.

btw.. miami of ohio not florida lol. when you live in ohio miami is understood to mean oxford but then we moved and everyone says "oh why did you want to leave florida?!"

yeah im already a student at miami so everything is squared away. i dont think that insurance asks for proof until fall semester. i think they assume that if im registered for fall im registered the whole year. but maybe if my mom tells them that im going back to miami theyll give me a break, who knows. and yeah, like you said, if i get tossed off her account i still have school insurance.

I was just saying if you get tossed off her account for false info, they could close her account for her too (or raise her rates or something). Even if it is work they could use that as an excuse to raise the rates for her company's insurance and when the company asks why they'll tell the company that it was you/your mother that caused the rates to go up. Her work could then be just a little unhappy with her :-) Been there, a friend's done that; she had had breast cancer and didn't tell the company hiring her and then the insurance was really high for everyone and when the company asked the insurance company why. . . Fortunately she was "worth it" to her company but they were not pleased she didn't disclose and they were caught flat footed. You could get your mom in trouble is all I was worried about (and not be covered if you're not taking classes whatever semester yet -- just because you are "in" a school you also have to be taking classes there and have an active student card to get services).

well i have a private loan through 5/3 and it says i have to cancel my loan within 5 days of disclosure... is that the date my loan is approved or the date its disbursed? cause if its the date its approved then im screwed and need to call the fin. aid office first thing tomorrow and tell them not to cancel my aid. i checked my account and its not out yet. but i dont want to have a 4500 loan given out that im paying on that im not using. so if i cant cancel it i might have to go to school.

Here's a student loan explained in "plain English", maybe it will give you a clue what terms mean?

well now im not quitting school. my mom bribed me to stay lol she said "if i pay your half of the rent every month while youre in school would that alleviate your money problems and allow you to stay?" and i said "well i guess but i dont want to take 350 bucks a month from you" and she said it didnt matter she just didnt want to see me lose another semester and be even further behind. so im going to keep working and going to school and hopefully use that extra money every month for a pet deposit and security deposit or something.

my financial aid and loans were fine. i just had to tell them to reinstate my money and they did.

So, where does this leave us :-) All we care about is your health insurance, LOL.

How about your boss since you won't be working full-time (or are you going to try that too? I thought you said you needed time off from school?). Toying with him and getting his hopes up like that!

Good luck; sounds like the best of both worlds and maybe if it works out well your mother will keep it up? That would be good wouldn't it, or does she come with strings attached?

i went to work yesterday and about 10 people came up to me saying "hey, whats up new assistant manager" lol and i said "hey, alex, were you excited much? cause thats what i need to talk to you about" he was kind of mad that he has to train someone cause i wouldnt have needed training at all.

we thought of another good point im in the middle of finishing my math and science pre-reqs so if i wait until next fall that stuff will be a year out of my memory. id rather finish it while its still fresh in my mind y'know?

she usually doesnt come with strings attached. she genuinely wants to help us out.

Yes, math can be a problem when it gets forgotten. I have friends that put it off until their last requirements and didn't do so well and are sweating graduating.
