The DOD recently unveiled a new non-arms-bearing helicopter to add to it's arsenal. It's called the UH-72A Lakota. They say the name was chosen because the Lakota "were" peaceful. That one made me laugh. Does it mean they are violent now, or does it mean they no longer exist. Helicopters

Did you know it's a RULE to name all new military helicopters after American Indian tribes? That one struck me as strange too. Helicopters

My husband was in the other room one day watching TV, and I heard something being said about a group of Apaches moving in to join a fierce battle. Thought he was watching his "Wild West" history programs. I was expecting to see PEOPLE, not whirlybirds. Helicopters

Maybe the DOD should think about naming future weapons of war after Christian denominations. It would be interesting to hear the news reports....

"In today's news, three Catholics and two Protestants were shot down today. There were no survivors. In other news, the DOD has found serious flaws in the Methodists - so they will no longer be in service." Helicopters

Gee, do ya think anyone might get upset by hearing such news? Helicopters

i think it reminds me of an earlier conversation where ppl were trying to decide how to 'name' something... what if we named the helicopters after clowns?

but then, who would that disrespect?

Hilarious! Although the situation is of course grave, it would make the news more entertaining. Then the bubble head bleach blonde has a reason to smile!

i have heard that there is no official tribe named 'Lakota' .. i was a little confused, but is it that 'Lakota' is a place, like an ideal? ... rather than a 'name' for a group of people?

thought you might have a perspective on that....

Darrel, hubby says the Lakota were one of the major tribes of the Sioux nation.

Maybe I'm missing your meaning? Helicopters

perhaps it was a legend..... but, i get things mixed up sometimes.... similar to the term 'america' .. it has an alternate meaning (several actually) aside from 'naming' the people...

i would have to research and at the moment im occupied with other matters, so i was hoping someone might have time to research or would know the answer...

thank you Tomi fr the input.... there are different versions of 'knowledge' and i was looking for this particular aspect of an equation to fit the pieces...

no prob... i can research it later.... but if it wasnt in fact the Lakota i am referring to, it may have been a different native group altogether i'm thinking of..... there is such a story i beleive... just need to research a little more is all... thanks again : )

Let us know what you find out, ok? I might be tempted to do some research for you if I wasn't chin deep in trying to write a business proposal right now. Helicopters

Each nation has bands. I believe the Lakota have seven of them (Oglala, Brule, etc.)

one source says:

The Oglala Lakota or Oglala Sioux, meaning "to scatter one's own" in Siouan, live in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota bordering Nebraska and 50 miles east of Wyoming, the second largest reservation in the United States. The reservation has broadly three parts, pine covered hills and ridges, grassy plains and a desert area. All three parts are noted for natural beauty. The Oglala Sioux see themselves primarily as part of the Lakota or Sioux people.

the people i knew were in Valentine Nebraska, the same Oglala mentioned in the artilce link.. alive, but suffering...

and so, this is a group of people from my perspective who need my supportive consideration...

words do have several meanings to different people.... names are just attempting to identify a group.. the error is when we assign a general identity to large groups..... people are people.... with heart and feelings....

the disconnection of massive industry has made eyes myopic... these people have suffered a very long time...

no one individual is perfect, no tribe, no human race....

we are all fallable and commit errors at times and forgiveness is the quintissential pathway to transcendence form past mistakes imho

war machinery has proven its neccessity, but, we, as people can never afford to forget the cost of life.....
