I would go at it sideways and work on self-esteem:

http://www.amazon.com/Self-Esteem-Wo.../dp/1572242523

But a lot of people like, When I Say No, I Feel Guilty:

Maybe you could describe the context in which your T recommended the book. Without any context, I just imagine you going to a session and him/her saying "go read this ****ing book because you aren't assertive enough." And I doubt that is what actually happened.

Maybe part of the homework for learning to be assertive is to find a book on your own? Assertiveness Learning to do what is necessary and good for you...

I agree, the book "When I say no, I feel guilty" could be a good place to begin. Assertiveness Maual Smith, Bantaam Books

I think the one book that helped me a lot wasn't geared towards self esteem but it helped manage those thoughts that interfered with me being assertive:

Mind Over Mood by Dennis Greenberger and Christine Padesky
