I've discovered recently that magnesium is a god-send for anxiety- it's so relaxing. My psychiatrist encourages me to supplement with it. I've been taking 1000mg a day recently and I feel much calmer. Just wanted to share!

I have tried, but I've kept my dosage around 100-200mg. Don't notice much of an impact at that dose, but I'm having luck with valerian root.
Does 1000mg not destroy your stomach? What brand/type of magnesium are you using?

It doesn't affect my stomach at all, and I do have a sensitive stomach. If you find magnesium does affect your stomach, go with magnesium glycinate.

Thank you for sharing, cheshiregrins. I have heard here and there that magnesium can help.I'm on a very tight budget and the last two natural supplements I bought didn't make a big difference, so I was a bit hesitant about magnesium. But I will definitely try it now.

Hi! I heard about anxiety sometimes being the result of low magnesium. Is there a way to actually test if you have low magnesium maybe through a blood sample?

There are blood tests but apparently they're not very accurate because only a small % of magnesium is contained in the blood serum. If you're under a lot of stress, drink carbonated or caffeinated beverages, eat a lot of sweets, drink alcohol, or are anxious/hyperactive, most likely you're low of magnesium and could benefit from supplements. You could just try supplementing and see if it helps. It's very difficult to overdose from magnesium. You'll just the "runs" if you take too much - some people's stomachs can't handle too much (magnesium glycinate is much easier on the digestive system). Obviously if you take mass quantities it can affect your heart etc., but that's very rare and usually just found in people who have kidney problems. My doctor said I can take 1500mg a day and that it's pretty harmless. I find it very relaxing; my friend also found that it helped her anxiety.

I take ZMA (Zinc/Magnesium/Vitamin B6) and it did wonders to my body and spirit. Much cheaper than buying all 3 separately and with optimal dosage.
Add multi-vitamins, vitamin D3, Omega 3-6-9 and you have the recipe to become the very best version of yourself. Creatine, Glutamine and HCL are good but not necessary. |

A store called Nutrition Sport Fitness, in Canada but if you investigate the nutrition store in your area and educate yourself on the best ZMA they offer, you'll find out the answers you seek.
Good success. ![]() |

I take a calcium/magnesium supplement to help treat muscle spasticity caused by my testosterone injections. I don't find it does much to my mood, personally.
Oddly enough, I started supplementing magnesium and chromium in my horse and have noticed that the combination has really helped him be able to relax more, so I am definitely a believer in its ability to help calm, I just don't feel it personally with my own supplementing. |

I take a zma supplement for night time leg cramps. I don't notice any effect on my anxiety but just for the leg cramps, it's worth it.

As much as I hate spending money on things that don't end up working, I think I may want to try this based on more reading I did on magnesium after reading your thread. Perhaps I will try it and post up a thread about the effect for me.

I have also read that there is a difference between magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate/orotate. Magnesium oxide is not absorbed well and causes the stomach issues and isn't nearly as beneficial for anything outside of the digestive tract.

Never heard of this, thank you for sharing. Is there a thing as too much magnesium though? I'd be afraid I'd be taking too much.

It varies depending on the person and the type of magnesium, and its effect on you. Anywhere from 250-500mg is pretty standard. Up to 1000mg for those with any form of malabsorbtion/considerable deficiency or more severe symptoms they are trying to counteract with the supplementation. (Like Fibromayalgia). But if your body does not take a higher dose well and you get digestive issues from a higher dosage, a lower dose of the 250-500mg area could be better for you.
Magnesium OXIDE (60% elemental) is a laxative, not absorbed by human body as much. Better forms of magnesium are TAURATE, GLYCINATE, CITRATE (16% elemental), MALATE (6.5% elemental), ORATATE, CHLORIDE (12% elemental) in form of oil. Chelated magnesium is far better absorbed than magnesium OXIDE but cost more. Complementary medicine practitioners rely on chelated magnesium, such as magnesium GLYCINATE, TAURATE and ORTATE (magnesium plus amino acids) to treat serious cases of magnesium deficiency. Those kind of magnesium have less laxative effect on the intestines than magnesium citrate, so they are recommended if you tend to have loose stools. OXIDE appears to have high amount of elemental magnesium. One 500 mg capsule of magnesium oxide contains 300 mg of elemental magnesium. But little of that amount is available to the body because it is not absorbed and therefore not biologically available. One recent study reported 4% absorption rate of magnesium oxide. This means 12 mg of 500 mg capsule are absorbed and 288 may stay in the intestines, acting like a laxative. if your not trying to get the laxative effect, bioavailable low elemental magnesium is Better. Because the body can actually absorb more of that. Some supplements don't obviously specify which they are on the front, others say they are a bioavailable type but are actually mixed with magnesium oxide to make them cheaper to produce. You just want to pay attention to what is in thw supplements you choose. |

I should take it but it's not prescribed even if I'm proven deficient. I try to refill with the cheapest kind when I can. Another type would probably tear up my tummy less, but what can one do? I'm not made of money.

It also helps immensely with migraine prevention. I went from nearly a migraine a day to 1-2 per month at most, some months none.
