I have had around 10 traffic violations 2 of which were alcohol related. The last of which were 3 years ago which was a parking violation. The last alcohol violation was over 6 years ago. Since college I have gained two degrees, been married and divorced to someone that had a history of cheating and cheated on me. I feel the divorce was justified, and I still talk to her with dwindling animosity. I have been pretty successful in any material undertakings, jobs, etc...I am not overly hostile, quick to anger, sometimes I feel the need to prove myself, but not all the time. I have stopped any pattern of traffic violations (even though my left blinker is currently burned out and I have not replaced it).
All major traffic violations occurred between 18 and 24. I am 30 now (parking violation in 2002). I am seeking a job with the federal government and am be assessed for anti-social personality disorder as a part of a medical clearance. I have never considered myself to have any type of personality disorder, but I guess if you have the problem you may not know. I have considered my driving record to be a problem of immaturity and the thrill of driving fast cars, bikes...etc. I never thought it would be viewed as a disorder. I guess repeated violations of speeding and alcohol related offenses (DUI) during that time of my life could be viewed as a personality disorder, but I'm not sure. I can say one thing, this process of receiving a medical clearance makes me feel like I do have a disorder of some sort. Since this has delayed my hiring and I have over 3 years of time invested into attaining this job I feel depressed, overly concerned with it, I feel that if I don’t get the job I have no idea what I'll do, so I feel hopeless, especially if I am refused a clearance for having a personality disorder! What do you guys think, disorder or a matter of immaturity? Confused, SkyHawk |

Welcome. First of all, who is assessing you? Is it a certified psychologist or psychiatrist? Secondly, even if you 'are' diagnosed with some sort of personality disorder - be it antisocial or not - it is discrimination not to hire someone on the basis of illness/disability. They should do the best they can to accommodate you.
I do agree with you and the others that the violations were mainly due to immaturity. BTW - what kind of job are you trying to get? |

skyhawk, hi and welcome! i think that would be immaturity...reason being, if it were to to a specific problem, i don't think that behavior would've stopped completely and on its own.
having said that, i think it's awful that these things are still haunting you to this day. you need to see an atty about having these things expunged from your record...at least some of them, so it won't look so intense. i might cost you more than a few bucks, but i think it would be worth it. when i worked for attys, we constantly had ppl coming in for expungements of records from when they were younger. they're older and wiser now, and these things were coming back to haunt them as well. gl and let us know!

Clinical Psychologist that works with the University of Washington used by the FAA. The position is Air Traffic Controll. GS-12 level facilty.
Most likely the tests will include the MMPI-2 and others. I'm nervous because the test is so long, and they correlate questions together based upon multiple different scales designed to asses personality disorders. After reading about the scales and disorders tested for it seems that everyone I know falls into one category or the other, at one point in time or another. I also think that it would be a faulty way to test for a disorder if the baseline profiles to compare to were not Air Traffic Controllers. Most Controllers tend to be very independant, overly controlling, and very confident, technical, you name it. I think that it would be an incorrect evaluation to rate my profile against a corporate manager, or a convicted murderer or rapists,...!!! Anybody know about the MMPI-2? SkyHawk |
