For me it happened when I tried to return to work after my divorce. The state had a separate job counselor for people with learning disabilities and she discovered my ld was actually PTSD which she had dx by a state p doc. Later on a p doc in private practice also dx me with chronic or complex ptsd, but that’s for another board. At any rate it took me a decade to get back on my feet as I was also raising a kid on my own.

Mine didn't really start until I realized the abuse in my marriage. Several days of flashbacks in hospital and they said "you have PTSD symptoms." Mostly it's better but sometimes it's like a wolverine in a meat packing plant, tearing me to shreds.

I don’t know. I was in therapy and my T mentioned that I was traumatised and either I looked into it then or just generally figured it out from reading forums and stuff.
Thanks for this!

Well I don’t have a dx from a doctor because I live in the UK and things work differently here. I have accessed therapy privately and they can’t diagnose.

You didn’t say when did you get a dx, you just asked when you realised you had it, so I didn’t realise you only meant a dx.

I don’t need a dr to tell me what I already know!

Anyways..... I got my PTSD diagnosis when I was evaluated by a psychiatrist. I got my bipolar diagnosis at the same time. PTSD wasn't even on my radar.
Thanks for this!

A psychiatrist and a psychologist but I knew I it had before I got to them. They just confirmed my thought.

A psychologist can diagnose PTSD. I got SSDI with backup from a therapist/psychologist, not a pdoc. Although I have been diagnosed by both psychiatrists and psychologists.

I first received my diagnosis after having been previously diagnosed with panic disorder. My first T believed it was panic disorder because the panic attacks were the most prevalent symptom. When I moved and switched to my T/psychologist, he discovered it was really PTSD. So that's how I got my Dx initially.

I was Dx'ed by an IP pdoc when I started having panic symptoms while watching a funny movie. Weird but true.

I was first diagnosed by a psychiatrist over 30 years ago. It's been confirmed by additional psychiatrists and a psychologist.

I think a lot of PTSD goes undiagnosed, for many different reasons. I do feel a therapist can help with diagnosis. I also believe many are accurately self-diagnosed.

Blessings to anyone/everyone suffering PTSD/CPTSD.

Read an article in Glamour Magazine written by Helaina Hovitz and her experience with PTSD after being in New York during 9/11. Her symptoms and experience mirrored mine. Up until then, I thought PTSD was limited to soldiers at war. Boy, did I have a lot to learn!
