I came across this book today - The Road Home - How to Get off Drugs Safely and am considering purchasing it. I see that it is endorsed by a physician who specializes in detoxification, but haven't found any credentials for the author. I *did* see the author has written various textbooks as well, so wondering if he compiles info from other sources.

Thank you in advance Is Anyone Familiar With the Book "The Road Home - How to Get off Drugs Safely?"

I am not familiar with the book, however I did take a look at the website. The website is anti-psychiatry and anti-meds. The physician who endorses the book has connections to scientology.

Any legitimate psychiatrist can help you taper off meds. If I were you I would talk to my psychiatrist rather than spend money that quite likely supports a VERY destructive cult.

Really? Oh, knowing that I'd be leerie of such a person who calls himself a Psychiatrist.
You are right, any legitimate pdoc can help a person get off of meds. safely. Now, if one is referring to "street drugs" he or she can direct a person where to go for treatment while treating that person too. Many group and non-group programs are available at many of our medical centers, that work with pdocs., therapists, psychologists and counselars.
Some pdocs. specialize in areas of the field, where I go the pdocs. work with people with any mental disorders, but at the same time some specialize in ADD,Bipolar,Substance Abuse, etc.
I'd stay away from any pdoc. that suggests going off meds., especially if they are helping, just for the sake of being med free, and doing "it" med. free. We just do not "snap out" of our disorders.
Take care now,
DE

ACK, Kismet...I didn't pick up on that part about the Scientology. You're right, I DON'T want to buy into that. My instincts were correct then in not being able to find info on the author right off. Thank you for finding that info.

I think due to all the meds I'm on and the "overmedded" feeling I've been having lately I just kind of had a knee-jerk reaction when I saw the book. I do have a great pdoc so I need to just calm down and discuss that with him at my next visit.

DE - thanks for all the ideas for other avenues to check out if I need them!

That's why I love this forum!!

P.S. My T. told me yesterday to not be reading so much about drug reactions and such since I have a tendency to catastrophize. Is Anyone Familiar With the Book "The Road Home - How to Get off Drugs Safely?"

Your T is right, I use to get obsessed about all that stuff, which I think delayed me from getting help.
Heck, my dad when he was alive and on all meds for emphysema, prostate,GI, etc. problems, he delayed improvments, finally I told him he has to give in a little, he did, and I think that helped him prolong his time on this earth. We then were able to have more time together.
Keep in mind, not everyone suffers from all the side effects a med will have listed. To cover their butts, companies have to list all the possible side effects that had or can occur when they were researching the med before it was approved by FDA and went into production.
It is always important though to keep the prescribing doc or pdoc informed of any reactions/side effects you may have, some are mild and do go away, while other side effects aren't sooooooooo, by talking to the doc can help decrease the chances of negative effects.
Lots of luck and patience with this.
Sincerely,
DE

What sort of drugs are you currently taking, Azalysa? I only ask because there's a great book out there called "The Anti-Depressant Solution". It's definitely not a do-it-yourself process...the author is very firm about following doctor's orders, etc., but it contains a lot of great information about how the drugs work and how you should taper off, and why it's so important. The doc who wrote it isn't as enthusiastic about SSRI's as many, but he's not an anti-medication activist or anything like that. (He does, in fact, prescribe SSRI's himself.)

best to find a psychiatrist you trust to help you detox.

last year, i tried detoxing on my own and ended up having a psychotic episode, in a state of catatonia, in the ER, and into the psych ward for 2 weeks. that was the most embarrassing experience in my life. it still bothers me, yet am unable to discuss with anyone what happened to me.

Thank you all for being so encouraging - I'm sorry it's taken me awhile to get back here - combination of not feeling well enough to be online and/or trying to get out more.

Ben - I'd be very interested in that book. When I wrote this original post I had not yet been started on the latest med I'm on - Lamictal - and after being off work on disability for 2 1/2 months, on a boatload of meds and STILL not seeing any improvement, I was starting to wonder if I should just go off of them.

To answer your question: I am currently on 500 mg Depakote, 100 mg Zoloft, 150 mg Wellbutrin SR and just completed my first week of 25 mg Lamictal - on the ramping up slowly method. Additionally, I have Ambien and Ativan to take "as needed."

Non-psych meds are a high dosage of Synthroid and HRT.

jennie: I'm so sorry you went through that. *HUGS* And thank you for sharing that with us here. I think many of us get discouraged with taking so many meds and often, at times, still feeling so ill, so I think you so much for showing an example of why it is not a good idea to go cold turkey.

Again, thank you all so much!! Is Anyone Familiar With the Book "The Road Home - How to Get off Drugs Safely?"

Jennie,

I'm still considering the topic of detoxing at least from a couple of my meds. I wasn't clear when you said you detoxed yourself if you went cold turkey or did you use a guide to help you go down slowly?

How's that baby doing?? Is Anyone Familiar With the Book "The Road Home - How to Get off Drugs Safely?"
