I have been off my meds for a week and a half now. Just kept forgetting to get them filled. So I am really debating now to stay off them till after the holidays so I can enjoy some drinking along with the rest of my family and friends. I cant enjoy alcohol when I am on the meds and I dont feel I want my family asking me why I am not drinking along with them. I still would like to have the pleasure of having a drink once in awhile.Part of me feels this is a bad choice I am making but one that will make me feel like I will have to give out information I dont want some of my family members to know.To me that makes it worth it. Just wish It wouldnt hurt to have a drink once in awhile while I am on the meds . Off my Meds Off my Meds

There are very few meds which come with an absolute prohibition of alcohol. Most drugs come with warning against the use of alcohol due to possible enhancement of intoxication, or potentially defeating the purpose for which the drug is taken in the first place.

An occasional drink is not going to hurt, generally. If you have any questions about specific meds and alcohol, please feel free to PM me.

It's nobody's business why you might choose to drink or abstain, in any case. You could come up with a simple statement, such as, "I don't like the way it makes me feel." Practise it, so it comes out easily. And quickly change the subject.

As for being off the meds, I'd encourage you to try and track how you feel, so you can anticipate the possible return of the symptoms you had been treating with the medication. And notify your doctor the next time you're in the office.

Happy holidays!

Also, with certain meds, you can skip them for a day or two (say, the weekend), and be able to indulge in alcohol for that time. You should speak with your doctor first, though, of course.

which meds are you off?

most psych meds stay in your system for a while and you won't feel the negative effects of what you are doing (not taking meds properly) until when you least expect it. psych meds are supposed to "stabilize" you . . . but if you don't take meds properly, you can't be stabilized, you end up on a rollercoaster ride

I am getting moody and reaaaaaaaaly ... well the word that rhymes with witchbut add a y to it on the end lol. Thanks also for your imput! I appreciate it.

These words strike cold fear through my heart...

hoo boy... I have to say that my initial reaction is alarm. Every time my husband has let his Lexapro prescription run out, he turns into a bug-eyed monster. He does NOT handle cold-turkey withdrawal well. He doesn't even notice the change in himself (because he thinks that the problem is ME), but I do... he becomes almost impossible to live with. He gets really sensitive, VERY defensive, very irritable.

So, Bethy... I wish you well, but also keep an eye out for how your family is reacting to you during this time. I would also recommend that you ask them if they have noticed a change in your temperment. Going off meds is something that the whole family has to live with, so please be fair to them. Off my Meds

MMM~ I thought about it but I am not willing to take the risk of drinking while on the meds. I dont know what it would do to me and I dont want to take the chance of ending back in the hospital again. Thanks anyways.

Bethy, have you weighed the outcome of not taking your meds just so you can have a couple of drinks?? You've been off of them for a couple of weeks already and if you go through with staying off, I'd hate to think what *I* would be like by the end of the year!

You need to feel more important than whatever anyone says to you about not drinking! You can come up with a simple reason that doesn't say anything about your meds or mental illness. Like Larry said, or "I'm alergic to alcohol" or "I just don't feel like it today." Anything! It's no one's business why you do or don't do something unless it impacts them. Your not drinking isn't going to make or break THEIR holiday.

You suppose you not having taken your meds for this long is what's making you extra sensitive lately?? I'd sure give it some serious thought if I was you... the not taking your meds, that is. Off my Meds

Why do you have to drink to enjoy the holiday? Off my Meds Heck, I can't drink due to my medication sounds like a great excuse to me (when asked).

Nothing is important enough to me to jeopardize my health (mental or otherwise) especially against doctor's wishes. Of course, this is easy for me as I don't have to associate with people who drink. No one in my family or hubby's family drinks consistently. In fact, his dad has beer in their fridge from before we got married.

I agree with LMo...as the spouse of someone taking an antidepressant "off my meds" are scary words.

You're an adult Bethy, you make your own choices. Be safe no matter what you choose.

Hubby already said I am a grouch. Last night it was really bad. He said he thought I was pmsing! lol. I dont think I was that bad though. LOL!And really he only has to "put up" with me for about 4 hrs a day. So its not that bad on him I'm not like this all the time. Thanks for your ocncern though. Take care too.

Tomi,

If I wasnt concerned I wouldnt be in such a dilemma right now. I mean at least I diddnt want to try drinking when I was on them. Not to say that wont happen. I am thinkering on prolly going back on them because of a few things I have been informed about. I dont see why I cant have just a few things that bring me a little bit of pleasure. I like the taste of a wine cooler once in awhile and a whiskey slush too. I miss being able to drink .

**You suppose you not having taken your meds for this long is what's making you extra sensitive lately??** I'm not being extra sensitive! Unless I am being ragged on somehow. Guess a person isnt allowed to have a bad day . Geesh!

Thanks for your input Tomi~

LOL That sounds exactly like when I ask Jerry "Why are you angry?" His response is "I'M NOT ANGRY!!!" Oh yeah? Then why the angry response?

Personally, NOTHING is worth my sanity; not that I can't drink and certainly not what people will say. 'Sup to you, though, but I think you knew the answer all along.

Well, I can say that nothing makes me more defensive than other people telling me how *I* feel. I guess I can understand his reaction, although seems like a fair enough question when you're on the outside of the situation Off my Meds

I don't ask him out of the blue! LOL I ask him when he's been slamming doors, stomping dirt through the house and being generally nasty to me! Don't forget, he resorts to passive agressive behavior, sometimes. Off my Meds

Leann~ I just feel like I am upsetting everyone. And that was not my intention! So many damn things are getting taken away from me here and I just want something to enjoy is all! You have no idea what its like to have every type of security you got and just having it ripped out from underneath you. Its just no fun . Dang it maybe tonight since I am off them meds I am gonna get drunk. Lord only knows I need it!

Bethy - I totally know what you mean. I have phases like that too -- where it feels like I can't say anything right and I find myself either having to apologize to people or take my foot out of my mouth or just generally feel like a big dork with no social skills. Not saying that you're like that -- but I'm guessing that you might be feeling the same way.

I later go back and re-read the stuff that I felt stupid about writing and usually I realize that it wasn't as bad as I originally thought. I hope that happens to you, too. Because to me, you haven't really upset ANYONE -- we're just worried about you and why? Because we think you're great. THAT'S why!

Cheers, by the way...
Love,
LMo
