Well, I've just started taking an anti-depressant for the first time (it's only been 1 week) and I've noticed some side-effects but it's hard to tell what's causing them. I'm hoping to find out if anyone else has experienced something similar and if anyone has any advice.

It's been one week since I've started:
Wellbutrin (150mg SR)
and Trazadone (25-50 mg at bedtime to help me sleep)

I normally drank 1-3 cups of coffee per day or took caffeine pills. The very first day I started on Wellbutrin, I had a small coffee and it made me way overstimulated and jittery and anxious. So I decided to cut out caffeine (been drinking decaf).

Now I'm getting mild to severe headaches everyday, which might be from the wellbutrin, the trazadone or the caffeine withdrawl (or any combination of these). I'm also getting a weird feeling in my head, like there's a lot of pressure, kind of like in an airplane. I'm finding it really hard to get out of bed in the morning (trazadone "hangover"?). I often experience this weird and kinda scary out-of-body feeling, like I'm just on auto-pilot. This only happens when I'm around people or talking to people. I hear myself talking but it feels like it's not really me.

Anybody else have similar experiences or any insight. I have a follow up appointment with my GP in a few weeks and I will definitely mention these things, but in the mean time any feedback would be appreciated.

The headaches are most likely caffeine withdrawal. It can be bad for a couple weeks.

The getting out of bed is definately the Trazadone. Give it some time, most likely you'll get over it. If not tell your doc. Don't give up too quickly. The foggy head is probably the trazadone too. Stick with it.

Decaf still contains some caffeine, about 10-20% the amount of regular coffee.
I recently started a new stimulant med and decided to stop consuming sugar, salty foods and caffeine. I tried to do it all at once and had two days of absolutely miserable headaches. Now I'm just on a much lower amount of caffeine, sugar and salty foods than normal, and I've been doing fine. It's good to taper things off over time.

When I first started taking wellbutrin caffeine definitely had an exaggerated effect on me. I felt so clear and open the first couple of hours after having a soda. Then I would get jittery and anxious and later crash. After drinking soda a couple of times and noticing that I got intense death-anxiety so much so I couldn't look at older people, I knew I just couldn't be drinking caffeine. Lol.

Since then I slowly began drinking caffeine again and I believe the intense effect wore off.

At this time this was the only med I was taking. So it was definitely the wellbutrin. I know that caffeine often causes the release of certain neurotransmitters, just like alcohol, and that is why antidepressants can have such an intensifying effect.

I also had the effect of feeling very depersonalized for perhaps a week after starting the wellbutrin. 300mg. I was also recently diagnosed with bipolar 2 and am no longer taking any antidepressants. These effects could have had more to do with not being unipolar depressed.

Trazodone can definitely cause a "hangover" the next day, and I have also experienced headaches from it too. Had to go off of it for a while because of that.
I've never really had a problem with wellbutrin, but I have a really high med tolerance for the most part. I do know that it is one of the more activating anti-depressants, so caffeine will definitely have an effect

I felt jittery for a few days when I first started Wellbutrin and then again for a few days whenever I would get a dose increase.

Hopefully your side effects will resolve within the week.

No effects like that with Wellburtrin but had to get off Trazadpne--too sleepy all of the time.

Good luck. If the headaches are from the coffee, that won't last long.

I also take trazadone and need a stiff cup of coffee in the morning. I also find trazadone causes weird dreams for me as well

Thanks for the responses everyone!

I stopped taking the trazodone and my headaches have definitely improved. I think the trazodone was giving me less quality sleep actually (less deep sleep). My problem is generally not falling asleep, it's staying asleep. I usually wake up in the night and can't get back to sleep and have lots of racing thoughts. Sometimes I take a sleeping pill when that happens if it's still early enough in the night, but when I do that I'll usually feel pretty tired the next morning/day.

Does anyone know of a sleeping aid that works well for light sleepers or people who wake up and can't fall back asleep? Although I assume that long-lasting sleep aids would increase morning grogginess. I guess I should work on my CBT techniques instead!

The caffeine withdrawal headaches are slowly improving too.

Cheers.

Trazadone made me feel zombielike. The only side effect of welbutrin I had was lack of appatite. I would talk to.your doctor about a sleep aid. Unisom worked for me.
