Just got back from the doc and have been prescribed 150 mg of Wellbutrin and 25 mg of Lamictal. I am paranoid as a general rule, so the possible FATAL side effects of Lamictal are really freaking me out. I'm scared to start it tomorrow morning. How many of you who have taken Lamictal experienced "the rash?" As for my diagnosis, I am not really sure on that either. After 45 minutes with the doc, she was able to diagnose me with a "to be diagnosed" personality disorder, depression, and some syndrome that I don't remember. My symptoms: high levels of anger, periods of rage, paranoia, periods of low, impulsivity that borders on extreme, high sensitivity to noise/external stimuli.

I've had it and it's not like you have a little rash and then you die. You notice something is wrong, if you get any symptom it should be checked out. SJS can be mostly skin related but can also be fever, headache, body ache, sore throat, fever etc. If you get it you will feel ill. I recovered without treatment.

If you are a sensitive person, wellbutrin might make that worse.

Was this your 1st time with this psychiatrist? It was, right? You had mentioned that your GP had put you on Wellbutrin for anxiety? The pdoc agreed with the GP then? Why did he go with lamictal?

I take it and haven't had any problems. The downside is that it takes several weeks to get to a dose that will actually help. And I would say that it helps my depression way more than my anxiety.

Good luck,
EJ

Yes, it was my first time. She did not want to take me off the Wellbutrin as of yet but added the Lamictal to deal with my issues with rage/anger/impulsivity. I guess I just assume that a doctor knows what they are doing, but I still find it a little unnerving that in a 45-min first session she was able to develop such a "comprehensive" diagnosis. Although I was completely honest with her, what keeps someone from going in and making up symptoms to get medicated? I thought there would be tests or something a little more thorough than just "tell me what brought you here today." Hell, the answer to that question would take me days to explain, definitely not something I can summarize in 45 minutes.

Ha! Been there done that! Seriously though, Lamictal stay "in control" a lot. (In addition to Effexor and Geodon) I never realized that it actually made a difference until I didn't take it for a few days. Now, I never miss.

Wellbutrin was an absolutely terrible choice with your symptoms.
It pretty much intensifies every issue that you listed.

Did you ever ask why you were given it?

She diagnosed me with depression and intermittent explosive disorder. I, specifically, asked if Wellbutrin was a good choice for me because I didn't feel I was depressed She felt quite differently. So far, I've been on the Wellbutrin for almost 4 weeks. I can't quite say yet whether it is helping.

Lamictal is an anti-convulsant and was approved for bipolar treatment maybe 12 years ago. It's usually used for BP that leans towards the depressive side (hypomania) not classic BP (BP I). If you are not BP I don't why it was prescribed to you.

Anti-psychotics are used for agitation which sounds like symptoms you suffer from on occasion. I'm not sure how explosive disorder is treated but there's a good chance that ritalin is a drug used for that. Ritalin is a stimulant but can have opposite effects on some people (calming effect and improvement of concentration) which is why it's used for ADD. I've used ritalin recently for constant severe agitation and it did decrease it very significantly. I was surprised. I'm agitated depressive (mixed manic) and haven't found any relief due to side effects, no response to meds, etc. in 25 yrs except for a short period on paxil.

I've noticed that Psychiatrists can be pretty experimental a lot of the time, but it's not always whack.

The Lamictal rash is extremely rare. It mostly happens at high doses and when the dosages are increased too quickly. You will go slow and you will be fine.

I've been on 250mg Lamictal and it just isn't completely working. Adding Wellbutrin is what my psychiatrist insists happens but I've been pushing it off. I think I'm going to go through with it soon.I do not have anger issues or other items you mentioned, however.
