Nope. He must think you are bipolar. It is never used for unipolar depression.

I take Abilify, but I also take Lamictal. I can't recall if the Abilify was for anxiety or depression. Both my previous psychiatrist (who diagnosed me with depression) and my current psychiatrist (who diagnosed me with bi-polar) put me on it, so... Abilify for depression

I think the trick is to find the combination of drugs that works for you. And it's tricky. It's taken a few years for me to find a good combination: Abilify, Lamictal, and Concerta. I hate changing meds and hope I don't have to again for a long time because it always messes with my stability - sometimes drastically.

I've been dxed with bipolar. I take Abilify, Lamictal, Concerta, Provigil, Trazodone, & klonopin. I have been experiencing some depression. First my pdoc increased my Lamictal, but the depression continues so she just increased my Abilify. I was surprised at this. I thought Abilify was used to combat mania & delusions--not depression. Hope it works for me as well as for you. I was misdiagnosed with unipolar depression for many years & when dxed with bipolar spent about a year of trial & error to see which combo of meds worked for me so hang in there. As far as I know Abilify is used only for bipolar so maybe your dx has been changed.--Suzy

I was put on Abilify when I was dxed with bipolar. It was fine as long as I was "manicy" but it soon kept me too low. I was very depressed and couldnt snap out of it . They switched me to tegretol and I have been fine since. I would watch your moods on this drug and make sure it is not keeping you on the low side . I couldnt even get out of bed for months until my family finaly stepped in and talked to the Doc.

Good luck and Take care ,
Sher

I was prescribed Abilify for extreme irritability that I get when manic.
I quit taking it once for a month and it made me very depressed so I had to start taking it again.
I have read somewhere that Abilify is used for depression as well. I wish I new were to find that info again. I heard your question on other forums, too.

Diagnosed manic depressive, psyche doc said it was to help, but the drug made me very restless and greatly affected (e or a) my sleep Abilify for depression , so I told Doc I wasn't gonna take no more.

I only now take lamictal and klonopin.

I am not bipolr and I take abilify for depression. It seemed like it helped for over a year...right now I am having some problems, but it was great while it worked. I had a slight headache when I first started taking it--other than that, no side effects. Right now I am on 30 mg. I hope it works for you.

Never say never Abilify for depression. I have unipolar depression and was tried on abilify......unfortunately, it didn't help the depression much, but made me somewhat agitated.

It turns out that Abilify is sometimes used to complement the effects of other medication. I am taking 40 mg of Lexapro right now so my doctor said that the combination of the two drugs may "bump me out of depression". Abilify for depression
