In reading, I can only find abilify, an antipsychotic, is sometimes used in bipolar depression, but my depression is unipolar and my doctor wants me to stay on the abilify.
?? He tells me it is used more in Europe for depression, and the US is slower to approve more uses. Has anyone ever heard of this use, for unipolar depression? |

I haven't taken Abilify. I found an article about its use in unipolar depression, though. Hope this will help:

I am unipolar and I have been taking abilify for...I am not sure, over a year. That and my wellbutrin seem to play well together. Neither of them seemed to do the trick alone, but together they have done well.
My pdoc just added lamictal to the mix because I was having some problems with self harm and some up and down emotions--not severe enough to be hypomanic, but still there.

I was just reading about a study in which SSRIs were being used in combo with Abilify to treat unipolar depression. It sounded promising. I'm glad to hear that it's working for you.

this is a silly question ...but what is unipolar?

Unipolar, as I used it, and as far as I know, meant "not bipolar." I have only lows, no highs, as in bipolar.

At least I know I'm not theonly one on this combo. What I don't understand is, SSRI's increase serotonin, and abilify blocks it; I don't know how they work together. Oh well, that's why I'm not a doctor.

I found this in a research study.
Aripiprazole (abilify), a novel antipsychotic agent, is assumed to be a “dopamine-serotonin system stabilizer”. According to preclinical studies, aripiprazole exerts partial agonistic action on D2 and 5-HT1A receptors. Thus, it may block a receptor if it is overstimulated and stimulate a receptor when activity is needed.

This is the BS the drug company wants you to believe. For a drug to have to ability to choose when it wants to block or not makes no chemisitry sense. Abilify is a partial agonist, which means it acts like dopamine or serotonin in some parts of the brain, but not in others. I am not a big fan of it or partial agonists in general. The other one is BuSpar....need I say more?

I tried it for unipolar depression. Some like it, didn't suit me. Worth a shot! Altough costy....

Thanks, omega. I can't tell anything, one way or the other, but my psychiatrist really wants me to keep it in the mix.

I'm trying abilify now, and I hate it. Definitely the worst drug I've tried. If I stay on it I will truly be downright dangerous to public health. I'm stopping immediately.
Though, you may be different and it's perfect for you.

I hope you feel much, much better once you get off the Abilify. My black cloud lifted and my sanity returned once my doc had me stop taking Wellbutrin. Hang in there.

I hear that. I tried Abilify 5mg. once and felt like crap. Nausea, exhaustion, akathesia at one point and restlessness. (Not sleeping much) Abilify is certainly the worst drug I have encountered for psychosis or in general. I would not recommend it to anyone for any reason.

i hope you feel better soon. and that your dr. finds a comfortable med for you soon. meds effect each one differently- dont worry- theres one thats right for you. i had to try several before i got the right mix. some made me feel worse than ever. all the newer meds except celexa dont work for me. and thorazine which is older than the hills fits me to a tee and helps my paranoia.
