It's clear noow that I need to be on some sort of antipsychotic medication. (I'm probably Schizoaffective if anything at all, which proabably aren't) I am currently taking Risperdal 1 mg. (Means nothing is going on) and need a new medication. My mom is COMPLETELY against Geodon. But Abilify seems OK. Can anyone suggest any medications?

1 mg of risperdal seems like a low dose. My son is on 3 mg. and we have been told that is a low dose. What does your p-doc say? Maybe you need to increase the risperdal. Just a thought.

The only anti-psychotic I have taken is Stemetil/Compazine. I can't speak to its efficacy as anti-psychotic, though. I was given it as a treatment for severe nausea and vomiting. It had minimal physical side effects... just slight sedation.
I hope you and your doc find something that's helpful.

That can be interpreted two ways; one, nothing is wrong with me or very little or two, I don't tolerate antipsychotic meds very well, which is true to a certain extent. My pdoc says that I should switch from the Risperdal. maybe it's the Risperdal and I just need a lower dosage. But that would mean that nothing severe is going on. Which means that I may not need meds after all.

I have been taking Seroquel 200mg at bedtime for a few years. It has been extremely helpful for me.
Prior to the Seroquel I took Zyprexa but unfortunately it caused weight gain. What actually happened with the Zyprexa was I would get up at night and sort of 'sleep eat.' I'd often wake up with food wrappers and such in my bed but have no recollection of how they got there. So it wasn't actually the Zyprexa itself that caused the weight gain but rather a nasty side effect lead to the problem. When I discontinued the medication I began to lose the weight...12 lbs gone in the first month alone. Here's a link to the Seroquel web site. |

Phil, you doctor would be medicating you if nothing was wrong. 1mg of risperdal is on the low end of risperdal, but compared to other meds it is a pretty good dose; maybe comparable to about 5-7.5 of zyprexa and 200-300 of seroquel.

Well, now I'm taking Abilify. 5mg. last night, 10 mg. tonight and 15 mg. tomorrow night. I'll stay on 15 mg. until we (My pdoc , mother and I) change the dosage or switch all together. I was considering Seroquel if the Abilify fails but my mother won't have it. Seems all right.
