Does this sound like too many meds to you? I am on:

Effexor 225 mg.

Seroquel 50 mg. - 1 tablet 3 times a day and 2 tablets at bedtime.

Ativan 1 mg. - 1 tablet twice a day if needed

Remeron 30 mg - 1 tablet at bedtime

It depends on the individual. What is your diagnosis and what are your symptoms? Are you having difficulty sleeping ? I would think that the seroquel will really help with this. Why are you taking the Remeron with the Effexor? If you have a bipolar spectrum disorder, the rule of thumb is to take the lowest possible dose of antidepressants to keep mood cycling at bay. It is not common to combine antidepressants from 2 different drug classes. I take 150mg of Effexor and 150mg of wellbutrin in conjunction with Lamictal for my soft bipolar.

No that is OK as long as a psych is overseeing you and not a GP.

Sorry, type-o. I meant that it is NOT UNCOMMON to combine 2 meds from different drug classes (antidepressants)

I have been treated for Recurrent Major Depression with Psychotic Features on and off for 30 yrs.

Over those years I have been on a multitude of different meds, with a multitude of different combinations. But all of that time I have been under the care of pdocs.

I currently take:
Effexor xr 600 mgs
Provigil 200 mgs
Wellbutrin 150 mgs
Remeron 15 mgs
Clozaril 200 mgs
and levoxyl after my thyroid was removed.

If you are under the care of a competent pdoc, please don't worry about the number of different meds you take, just enjoy the positive outcome.

Take care!

I guess I should start trusting my Psych, that he knows what he is doing. Thanks

Can the medications that I am on cause memory problems? I get sooo frustrated because I don't remember things I did or phone calls that people made to me. I don't remember calling my psychologist or the conversation when she returned my call. I accused my daughter of not calling me and wishing me a Happy Mothers Day and she did call. I just forgot. You know how embarrassing that is when you can't remember?

I too take what seems like a bunch of meds:
Abilify
Lamictal
Wellbutrin
Antabuse
Dexidrine

I trust my pdoc knows what he is doing. It seems like this med combo is really working for me.

The memory problems… Yes, I too have some memory problems. Sometimes I wonder if it is the meds, but if I think about it I have always been a little forgetful and it has been getting worse with age. I can’t really say what causes it. I tend to write things down a lot—I have stick notes all over my office and house. I even have some in my car.

I get the feeling recently from reading that combinations of medications are being used more commonly, especially for people who haven't responded to several or many trials of single meds.

I'm currently taking Emsam, Abilify, Provigil, and Xanax; and Seroquel for sleep.

I think it's often trial and error; if the combination of medications works for you, then they're probably what you need, especially if other meds haven't worked in the past. If you have a pdoc you trust, then you can always ask further questions, too, to resolve any worries you have about what you're taking.
