My apologies if there is already a thread on this, I couldn't find one on the search engine.

Question: Has anyone taken Seroquel for depression and had success with it?
If so, how long did it take for your depression to lift after starting it?

My boyfriend is depressed - he has bipolar 1 so he cannot take antidepressants due to risk of mania. He takes 200 mg of Lamictal (mood stabilizer with antidepressant properties) and his doctor added Seroquel XR last week for his depression.

He is on the Seroquel XR starter pack which titrates up to 300 mg over two weeks. After that, he has a prescription for 400 mg.

Thanks for any input - I'm hoping his depression lifts soon.

I took Seroquel (Quetiapine) back in the 90s along with an antidepressant. I didn't stay on it long as the side effects were too much for me. It made me really tired and kind of retarded while I was on it.

It didn't help with my depression and neither did the Effexor I was taking with it.

I know one person that takes it that does good on it but he has some side effects he's willing to live with.

I take Seroquel, both for anxiety and as an augment to my AD. I'm on 300 mg IR. I love it. It really helps. It does make me sleepy, so I take 200 mg, at night, and 50 mg in the am, and 50 mg at noon. The 2, 50 mg, doses don't make me tired, or at least not that I notice.

Risperidone is another good ad on AAP for depression.

I've been prescribed 200mg seroquel for anxiety and depression (I can't take SSRIs due to allergic reaction)..

I'm not sure yet if it will help...

I haven't found Seroquel to have any impact on depression for me. It does work exceptionally well for my anxiety, though.

The only advantage I have found from Seroquel is that it helps me sleep well.

Thanks for the replies! Good news - his depression is lifting, it helps him sleep and he doesn't feel overly sedated. =]

I took Seroquel several years ago. I had to switch to another antipsychotic because I got that Seroquel hangover. I was too sedated at my job.

lol I remember the first night I took it. My pdoc said this will sedate you. I want you to take it in bed, not earlier. He said I needed to be ready to fall asleep when it kicked in.

I said sounds good. I was in my pj's, took my first Seroquel pill. I decided to read until I was drowsy. Sure enough, I was sleepy within 45 minutes. I decided to use the restroom and then fall asleep. I had a bed that was quite tall. I needed to hop down to get off the bed. I started walking toward the bathroom and I got so dizzy I almost did a full face plant on the carpet! LOL

I did make it safely to the restroom and back in bed. My thought right before I fell asleep was pdoc wasn't messing around when he said take it in bed lol

It helped my depression (in conjunction with Emsam) but over time I had to take more and more. I didn't have any good options so wound up increasing to 1200 mg which worked for a few years then 1500 mg which didn't help much and only lasted a month or two. At that point it pretty much just didn't work anymore but I did get a good 8-9 years out of it which is a first for me.

Seroquel has helped my depression. I've been on anywhere from 100-800mg a day. It also really helps with sleep which in turns helps the depression.

I can't say if Seroquel has helped my depression or not, but it definetly gets me to sleep. I take 600mg of the SR. I know without sleep depression starts getting worse as well as psychotic symptoms.

I took 350 mg Seroquel XR for a while. I was also taking other medicine with it, including an antidepressant. I do think it helped my depression somewhat. I think it can in higher doses (400 mg is a higher dose). I hope it helps your boyfriend.
