I don't have borderline personality disorder, but I do have emotional regulation and tolerance distress problems. I have a few Dialectical Behavior Therapy workbooks for non-Borderline issues (and I just ordered one for Bipolar) and I've found them very useful, but I'm struggling. My psychologist is going to work on DBT-type therapy with me. She has some experience with it, but isn't professionally trained in it. She will give me some more materials. I can't afford to see a therapist weekly, but hopefully she can help me thinking about things from a different perspective and I can continue the self-help work. I've been doing EMDR and various other trauma work and typical talk therapy in the past. Also if anyone has any good resources for DBT, please let me know:-)

I have tried DBT a a few times, unfortunately I just don't "get it". I tried a group, but my mind wanders and I had a hard time focusing. Plus it was a general dbt group, and I was coming in as a beginner and not understanding. I did read the "official" book...I think by Marsha Linehan or something. Wasn't able to grasp much. There are really no dbt t's in my area.

I really hope it works well for you! It seems like a good thing.

My T does a mix of DBT, CBT & others. The Ts I've seen in the past were more into CBT & EMDR. I've never done EMDR, something about it scares me.

There is a forum associated with a social group here that is specifically about DBT......thought you might be interested. They also have a weekly chat regarding the DBT, but not exactly sure when it is.

Here is a link to the forum...many good discussions on some of the concepts in reading through the threads:
http://forums.psychcentral.com/forumdisplay.php?f=98

My psychologist suggested that I might get into their DBT group when the first group starts up again. It just started the last time she had mentioned it.....so in a few months. I am usually good at making sense out of things, but haven't been really successful with reading the DBT inforation & making sense out of it either.

unico,

There are people in my DBT group with other disorders. Generalized anxiety (a few w/ that trouble), treatment-resistant depression, and several of us suffer hate ourselves.

I have BPD, but I can tell you that my group has been very successful. There have been a few who left, because they weren't ready to commit. And a few others have stopped because it didn't feel right to them. The people described above are the ones I've seen stick it out for over one year now. I have noticed an improvement in all of us who've stuck it out. We still have tendencies to overcome, but we are a lot better than we were when we began!

That I can say. I wish you the very best!

I provide DBT to many of my client who struggle with emotional regulation. I mesh CBT/DBT, and feel that it comes with good results. Best set up for DBT is group work and individual sessions weekly.

DBT has been really successful for me. I agree with stormy that the best situation is weekly groups and weekly one-on-one. My T has a lot of training in DBT and really knows her stuff, I'm sure that has had a lot to do with my success. DBT is hard and it's not for everyone.

For me, I think it was the only thing that would have worked and I really believe coming to DBT when I did saved my life.
