I'm going to see a therapist on Tuesday and I was wondering what it is like to see a therapist. Has anyone been to a therapist? I am curious. However, my life is slowly improving. I haven't cut myself yet and yesterday I had an urge to cut myself but I had something in my hand and I was calm and I didn't hurt myself. I feel happy with myself. What should I say to the therapist? I'm not sure what to say.

Hey HappyCheeks,
I saw a Counsellor for about a year. To begin with I was really nervous and wasn't really saying much as like you I didn't know what to expect/to say etc. My Counsellor was really nice and was so patient. She just started off by asking how I was feeling and if there was anything in particular I needed/wanted to say. Then we took it from there. An hour is sometimes not long enough. I was very lucky that my Cousellor was a private Counsellor and she was able to give me extra time. My 2nd Counsellor however was from a charity and it was an hour and that was it. As I said an hour is sometimes not long enough |

Hello, happycheeks. There will be paperwork to fill out. You might want to go early to the appointment to complete the forms. You likely will be asked about what medications you are taking, including over the counters. The therapist will want a history of illnesses in you family. You might want to make a list and ask your parents to help you. The therapist may also ask you what you are experiencing that the therapist may help you with. You might even be asked what your goals are. It is mainly a get-to-know-you thing.
You might want to ask what is expected of you? Whether you will be able to participate in the treatment plan. Whether the therapist uses an eclectic approach or some other. http://psychcentral.com/psychotherapy/ http://www.wellsphere.com/mental-hea...therapy/782440 http://discussingdissociation.wordpr...client-part-1/ http://discussingdissociation.wordpr...lients-part-2/ http://blogs.psychcentral.com/therap...ill-of-rights/ http://psychcentral.com/blog/archive...ut-in-therapy/ http://psychcentral.com/blog/archive...lk-in-therapy/ |

Hey HappyCheeks,
Ye they are similar. A Counsellor looks at how to solve problems.... my counsellor said I have all the answers to my problems I just need help/guidance to find the answers. A Therapist will go in depth about your issues/problems |

ok so they arent green with polka dots, some may have that taste in clothing LOL but my point is a therapist is like anyone else. they are human beings like any other person in this world. they come in many different sizes, colors, shapes and type of person they are just like you are not identical to your parents, your neighbors friends. therapists are like just the average person who happen to have chosen helping people as their career choice. their career choice happens to be that of helping people feel better about their life, and their self. help people to better cope with their problems. what do you say to a therapist- that depends on why you are seeing the therapist. if you are going because you are having trouble with work related problems you talk about your job and the problems you are having in your work, if you are going because you are depressed you talk about why you are depressed, if you are seeing a therapist because you want to learn how to better take care of yourself you talk about that... there is no right or wrong way to do therapy. you go and talk about what ever is the reason you go. right now my therapist and I are discussing my case load, the fact that its almost time for me to take my boards from my license so that I will have LCSW credentials instead of a CSW, family issues, upcoming vacation issues, issues related to my mental disorders, ... all kinds of things that I feel need some "shoring up and taking care of" Just go and talk about what ever reason you have decided to go to therapy for. ![]() |

you can say anything you need to say to a therapist. Legally, they cannot reveal any information said in the sessions, unless it is something like you are an endangerment to another person, then they have to breach confidentiality and warn the person in danger. Other than that, everything is very confidential. Some people tell therapists things they have never even told anyone or have even expressed externally. Think of him/her as a teacher. He/she will teach you how to solve any issues you may have. Good Luck!

My T is awesome, but I've also had a bad one and one that was ok but we just didn't click. Keep in my in the beginning that it's ok to switch T's if you're not a good match, just like you might switch doctors or tutors who aren't quite your style.

There's a wide variety of treatment providers to choose from. Psychologist, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, etc, etc. And with every individual counselor there are unique approachments about how to handle certain issues. Get a room full of therapists together ( God forbid
![]() Along with treatment approach is just personality of the person. There's a chemistry that I think needs to be found at times for therapeutic work to take place (not all agree with this). Some use a lot of humor, which for me is a must. Some couldn't crack a smile if I paid them to. All business all the time, type. Some are warm and gentle, where some are more confrontive and skills based. Just remember that you are seeking a service, and have the right to move on to someone else if you don't feel a connection within the first few sessions. What to say: Typically they ask "What brought you in today?" I usually stress today. Why today and not 3 months ago, etc? What's happening that encouraged you to reach out for services? What do you want from treatment (goals)? I hope the appointment goes well. I do hope you can follow up and let us know how it goes. ![]() |

I've had ones who didn't let me get a word in edgewise, ones who said nothing at all, ones who didn't like their job, ones who were into it, ones who called me a liar...all over the map. The style that works for me is when they talk and listen in about equal amounts. I'd say find the one that works for you.
Good luck! HS
