It's difficult to compare our therapy experiences. I wonder if its due to different types of therapy. Interested to see what type of therapy your T. uses.

My T used to use Internal Family Systems mostly, but now she does more EMDR. Also mind/body therapy but I don't know if that's a separate category or what. Some art therapy too.

In one year, my T has used a combination of CBT, DBT, a tiny bit of psychoanalysis, and a healthy dose of person-centered. She recently mentioned doing inner child work.

Psycho-Dynamic but we recenly started a little EMDR-which is a little less talking and a little more structured.

I think right now it it is a combination of two, with the goal of doing CBT. However, until we get the anxiety under control, I think we do what I would think of, as "talk thearpy." We are also in the process of finding the root of everything.. to see if we can trace some links to events from the past that are triggering my worsening anxiety now.

My T uses a variety of methods, but right now, he's more focused on psychodynamic.

I'm wondering this too. How do you guys know this? Was it discussed during your initial sessions? My T has never talked about the specifics.

I've always been interested in psychology though I was ignorant when I saw my first T. Somewhere along the way she said that she did psychodynamic therapy. So did the next T, and she told me that at the first session. The T after that liked CBT but I didn't, so we did a bit of everything! Then came my T who said she was closest to family systems therapy and behavioral techniques, anything BUT psychodynamic. I asked her; she didn't volunteer the information. I didn't ask her right away and I wish I had.

My current T had IFS listed on her website and the PsychologyToday website, so I asked her about it. She was just learning EMDR so of course she told me that too.

I think anyone who doesn't know what type of therapy their T does, should ask. With my former T, I wanted to talk about my past but she didn't want to "go there", and I was frustrated. I didn't know ahead of time what her orientation was. It's good to do some research if you're looking for a T or switching, to know what kind you're looking for, if you have the option of choosing.

My T is strongly influenced by Family Systems Therapy and Humanistic therapy. But he has a psychodynamic element too sometimes. He is furthest from CBT. He uses a variety of techniques, such as EMDR, psychodrama, Lifespan Integration, Ego State therapy, etc. He tailors the treatment to what will help the individual.

Where I'm from there are three(?) main types of therapy, and a T will usually only specialise in one of the types. You then pick a T who uses the kind of therapy that will be most helpful for your needs. (This "division" is also important because insurance will only pay for a certain number of sessions, but if you switch the type of therapy you get the same amount of paid sessions all over again.)
Thanks for this!

Currently, it is a combination, but with the primary base being DBT and am nervously starting a new therapy, PE, (Prolonged Exposure therapy) for the PTSD.

I can usually recognize what type because I have a BA in psychology and took several counseling courses.

First T was CBT/DBT only. Second T used several methods and would tell me what they were. I asked current T what she uses and she said she tailors her style to the person.
