I just don't like watching scary or sad stuff. If I want that sad violence, I can go read a transcript of things clients have been accused of doing. Plus watching scary (horror or violence) gives me nightmares on top of the ones I already get. Finally, I just hate the feeling of being scared or frightened.

Light in August is my favorite Faulkner novel. I read it for the first time in 11th grade AP english too. Kind of funny they are still reading it 30 or so years later.
A classic is always a classic. I teach AP English 3, but I've actually not read Light in August. May have to pick it up out of curiousity. I'm always game for some variety on our reading list.

My partner watches it. She watches all sorts of scary sad drama horror stuff that I don't go near. She loves it. It gives her some catharsis sort of thing.

Go Down Moses may be my favorite Faulkner novel, although the publisher considered it a series of short stories, WF intended it to be a loosely connected novel. I liked The Sound and the Fury, As I lay Dying, Absolam, Absolam, and Sanctuary. I especially like Requeim for a Nun, a sequel to Sanctuary .

Just the opening scene from CSI puts me into a panic attack... and you know someone is going to die before you even start watching... it doesn't make sense to react that way but I still do.

I had nightmares for months after watching To Kill a Mockingbird when I was 6 - between Boo Radley, the drunk guy who attacked Scout and the courtroom parts, I was done in.

At this point, only As I Lay Dying is on our district's reading list (what is approved to teach to whole classrooms), but I can get away with much more variety when I do smaller reading circles (those choices don't have to necessarily come from the prescribed reading list). As I Lay Dying isn't my favorite, but I'll have to take a look at Light in August. It looks like an intriguing plot.

One of our retired teachers is one the foremost Faulkner experts in the world. He even looks like Faulkner. (God, he was/is the most amazing English teacher!) May have to get in touch with him. He'll be able to tell me if it would pass muster for approval in our district with our conservative policies (don't get me started).
Thanks for this!

Hell no! I'm bouncing off the walls. This feels great, but my brain knows this isn't good.

I saw Cagney's Public Enemy when I was a little kid. It scared the beezeesus out of me. And it wasn't even that scary, by spook movie standards.
