Where do you look when talking in your sessions? My eyes look at a book on her shelves to the right of her chair titled "The Little Match Girl". I just told her that a couple of sessions ago and asked if I could borrow it to read. I keep forgetting to take it....

Usually my daily problems, which leaves little time for CBT.

I try to look at her most of the time, but when I'm really thinking I look at the book.

T has a dollhouse directly across from where I sit. I find myself looking in there often.

I look at her desk and the grain in the wood. I probably know more about what her desk looks like than her!

I look at my t if I am ok, but as soon as we talk about something I am uncomfortable with, I look out of the window. If he insists we continue on the difficult subject & I am still looking out of the window, sometimes I say out loud, oh look, there's a squirrel, or there's a mahusive bird to take the attention & focus away from me!!! However, he is getting quite cute to my avoidance tactics!! Lol XXX

The rafters and skylight in his ceiling. There is a knot hole in one rafter that looks quite friendly.

Off to my right at a blank wall. Once I looked up and just past the therapist's head out the window and it drove her nuts. She kept asking what was out there and turned around to look herself a few times. That was sort of fun. The office is a couple of floors up and all one can see is some tree branches.
I only look directly at her when I ask a question or if I am angry.

I try to maintain eye contact with the T. I just think because it's a personal conversation that we should be seeing eye-to-eye. Sometimes I look around at the decorations and such but I haven't been seeing her long enough to really remember any of them.

At the bookshelf. Loads of interesting psychology books I really want to flip through. And there's this wall hanging with a poem type thing on it, I've stared at that for over a year and I still couldn't tell you what it says... It might be a reiki thing? Come to think of it, I don't know what books are there either, just that I remember thinking they looked good.

There is a large painting opposite to where I sit; it is a painting of the deep blue sea. I am sure my T purposely chose this one of all the paintings he has in his office, to place it opposite to where his clients sit.

I look at him or at my hands or feet.

It depends on what is going on the topic. Sometimes I look at her (sometimes in the eye but often at her dress, hand, etc) other times at the designs on the rug, most of the time on my coffee mug.

His bookshelf used to be a bit of a mess so I would imagine standing all the books up straight and try to work out how many more books would fill the shelf if they were straight, but now he's tidied it up I don't look at it so much. His office looks out on miles of beautiful sprawling countryside so if I'm feeling particularly distant I will look out of the window and mentally place myself miles away.
I do try to make eye contact but I struggle with it. |

I didn't know the name of the book I stare at until about 6 months into therapy. It's one of the few that face out so I can see the picture on the front. |

I mostly look at my T. So much so that I didn't even realize what all was in her office until she brought it up a few months ago. But when I'm shutting down, I look out the window or most the time I look at the metal brackets on her desk.

You know, I kinda wish my T had a dollhouse. I would totally get down on the floor and play with it... There are lots of toys in the room we've been meeting it lately. I usually look around at them while I talk. There's a stuffed Freud up on the top shelf that makes me giggle. No dollhouse though ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I had not noticed much more than my book and then a few weeks ago Pat the Bunny book was blocking mine and it bothered me. When I told her that's where I looked and things I had noticed, she said she was going to start moving things around to see if I notice. LOL |

It depends how 'touchy' the touc of covers action is. I range from strong eye contact- keeping my eyes on the picture we are discussing - sitting back to back looming at the floor. Although I suffer from hearing loss so when that's bad I have to lip read which I find really akward when I want to look away.

I find myself looking at his legs a lot (he has them stretched out), so I don't have to look him in the eyes. (I can report that he wears very boring socks
![]() I also see a lot of my hands or the water bottle they're holding. Sometimes, when conversation is lighter, I make eye contact too. |
