T's written policy states that clients have to pay for missed session UNLESS there is a 24 hours cancellation. If there is less than 24 hours notice, and if T determines that the reason for missing the session was beyond your control (some type of unforeseen emergency), then T won't charge for it.

I think my T's policy is very fair given that a time slot of reserved for the client. We must also remember that this is how T supports their family/pays their bills.

If you cancelled more than 24 hours ahead of time, I too think it's unfair to charge. My T is great about being flexible and rescheduling if I need to (which I don't do often) and I am also flexible when he needs to reschedule.

Ts can decide on rules for cancelling as they wish- the client can choose accordingly. So no, I don't think it's unfair if stated beforehand.
Thanks for this!

If I cancel less than 48h before the session, then I have to pay for it.
I haven't missed many. Only in the beginning, I might missed 2 sessions. It was because of my social anxiety and I was to anxious to get on the bus. She actually made an exception for me. That if it would happen again, she wouldn't report it, so it would cost me money. That made me not want to miss any more sessions. That she understood my anxiety. No T had ever done something like that.

I would be upset as well. That seems like plenty of notice.

Yes I pay if I do not give 24 hrs notice so he can fill that slot so he does not have lost revenue.

She has a 24-hour cancellation policy. In 4 years, I only missed one session without 24 hours notice. Since it was the only time, she didn't charge me.

Do you know what the cancellation policy is? That doesn't seem fair to me.

Yes, if I don't give 24 hours notice. If I'm sick or something out my control he usually reminds me and waives it.

I have to give 48 hrs notice. T specified which day I can cancel up to without being charged a fee. Does your T work on bus hrs? Maybe that's why.

I have to give 72 hours notice, and weekends don't count... only business days. It's crazy, but in the paperwork.

Did you get paperwork spelling it out when you started with this T?

I don't recall her rules for cancellation. It's never been an issue; she's very flexible as far as re-scheduling. The one time that I did just out-and-out cancel, and didn't reschedule, I paid for without even asking because I cancelled at absolutely the last minute the day I got lost hiking. I just assumed it was expected and never asked, and she never mentioned it either.

I think they should give their cancellation policy up front. I would not work with one who thought they needed more than 24 hours notice. If they did not tell the client the cancellation policy ahead of time, I would not pay.

You probably were given and/or signed the cancellation policy at your first visit. Usually 24-48 hours is the standard, but I've heard people talk about being charged for missing visits if the T is expected to keep that spot reserved for only a particular client, but that's pretty unusual. Talk to your T about it. Should be able to produce the policy with something showing you signed that you had been informed of the policy in advance.

My T technically charges for a missed session if 24 hours notice isn't given, but she is very flexible. Because I rarely, if ever miss a session, she hasn't charged me for the one or two times I've had to cancel with less than 24 hours notice, which I thought was very kind of her.

I think I'd be really pissed off if I gave that much notice and still had to pay for it.

My T is really lenient about cancellations. I have alot of health issues and sometimes I just can't make my appointment. I am so grateful that he understands. I used to have to cancel alot in the winter b/c of where I live, but I have AWD now, so haven't had to cancel as much b/c of snow.

I think it may be more usual in other countries that the therapist expects payment no matter what.

My first therapist had a policy of no charge for at least 24 hr notice.. If it was less than 24 hrs then he charged $25. He told me he didn't charge full session price because it wasn't 'lost' time. He said he can always use time like that to return phone calls, catch up on paperwork... Stuff like that.
