She has a comfy chair that she pulls up for herself and you...

I sit on the couch and my therapist sits in a chair across from me. I do wish he would sit a little closer, however.

It varies depending on how I am feeling about her in the moment. Usually we both sit on the floor, I think I am around 50 cm or less away from her

On the floor side by side with him. Upper-arms and shoulders leaning on each other, he sometimes tucks his feet under mine.

He has a recliner that he sits in and I sit across from him on the couch. I like to be across from him, but sometimes he will come sit by me and that's nice, too.

I realized something about my p-doc's office today--she actually has a trash can that I can reach easily from the couch to throw away tissues! MC's is under his desk, so across the room and awkward to get to, and T's is behind a chair by the door--which makes it easy to throw out tissues as I'm leaving, but not in the middle of session, so I end up holding them or putting them in my purse. P-doc has a second one under her desk too. (My comments about that at least gave us one light moment in today's conversation...)

he sits at his desk in his executive's chair. I sit in a chair that's close to the desk at at 45 degree angle.
There is another chair but it would be behind the door when it opens so wouldn't want to sit there. The wastepaper basket is behind him. So if I'm using tissues, I have to aim and throw them in. Sometimes he'll bring it closer. Or I'll hold onto them till the end and put them in the bin. Last session he mentioned I go through a lot of tissues. |

We both sit on opposite sides of the table. I sit down wherever I want (which is always the seat closest to the door - not even because I want to be able to leave without interference, but because I'm embarassed to walk past that seat to another (Yes, I have shame issues

I automatically head to the far corner of the room, sit in the end of the couch farthest from her padded rocking chair. I would think I would look for a quick escape route, but I don't. I fact, the route to escape from my seat would be rather difficult to navigate quickly. Around the glass coffee table to the left, avoid the chair to the right, don't bump her desk chair, and then the door. I'd be running in a serpentine fashion in order to get out.
![]() In the 9 months I've sat there, I have yet to spot a trash can!! I stuff the tissues in my pockets and toss them out at home. |

I just sit in the chair where I find it. I take the cushions out, though!

There's just one "patient's" chair in the room, with the desk between us.

My T's chairs are in fixed positions as the room is quite small but I'm comfortable with the distance - I wouldn't like any closer but further away would be OK as well if it was an option.

T1, in a chair next to his desk like being at the Dr's. T2, in a chair a cross from her with nothing between us - it's what I'm used to with past therapists and prefer.

Is the desk helpful or do you find it intrusive?

When I desire closeness, the desk feels like a barrier she can use to keep her distance. If I'm hurting, I wish the desk wasn't there. She used to move closer - close enough to reach out to touch my knee - when we were in an office without the desk in the way, which was nice if I was really sad. However now, she keeps her distance and it makes me wish she got closer.
If I'm anxious, it feels safer - like something keeping her at a safe distance, so she can't come in too close. If I'm especially nervous, I move my chair even further from my side of the desk. |

He always sits at the far end of a sofa and the options for me are two armchairs opposite; I sit on the one that is farther away. Recently, because of back problems, he has been sitting on a chair, so I changed armchairs and chose again the one farther away..

The Countess has her room set up for groups or families, so there is a choice of chairs. I choose the one directly opposite.

My first therapist's office was like that. It was just so incredibly small that the desk took up half the room. I swear the room was at one time literally a closet. He actually had me sit right beside the desk with him behind it so the desk wasn't quite between us. It worked out okay. You tend to adapt.

In my mental health nurse specialists room I sat opposite him, furthest back that I could but now he has handed me over to a new woman (mental health nurse) I simply just stand, near the door. The room is tiny so I prefer to be near the door, away from the woman.
