Yeah, just because it works for me doesn't mean it's going to be beneficial for everyone. Humans do get very attached to patterns though. I think some Ts forget that too easily.

This story was awesome! Thanks for the link, Crocus. Now, I must learn, just like the AI. I have to stop trying to help people that refuse to help themselves (I'm looking at you, ex-husband and oldest daughter!) and just walk away.
Thanks for this!

I really like knowing I'm abnormal and have been that way since birth. There were times earlier in life when I hated it, but then I realized it takes the pressure to conform off for me.

Normal is a weapon often used by society to keep people in line behavior-wise or to force them to be quiet about bad experiences like abuse. So in some sense normalization is a good way to defuse that weapon.

I was meaning more about non-therapists when I first was talking the attempts at normalizing something.
With therapists, I find it funnier when they try to normalize something by saying "even [they themselves] do X" - like I am going to find what a therapist does compelling or reassuring in any world that exists.

Well said!! I agree 1,000%.

When I think of "normal" people, in my mind a see a line of people on an escalator staring straight ahead. No emotion on their faces. Just riding the escalator like they are supposed to do.

As my T is fond of saying, what is 'normal' anyway?

Well, if you think about it, not being normal is normal. So normal is insanity. Insanity is normal. There IS no normal!

Usual may be a less off putting word than normal. Normal does not bother me and I don't really picture normal as being the stepford wives.

"Normal" is the illusion of the escalator. If you get on and ride like everybody else, then you are normal, ok and fit to be graded and rated by the people who have decided the destination. Society.

Only if you give them the right to decide what your 'normal' is. It's still handing your power over to another.

It makes me so angry, when you make choices that don't seem to be normal to other people and they want to judge you and decide if they agree. They want to convince you that since you've stepped off the escalator, you can't possibly know what is good for you or your family.

People would be better off if they would just do what I wanted them to do.

I agree. It just gets very tiring listening to it and feeling like you are trying to explain, when it's really none of their business. People who are supposed to love you (family) and people you've shared much of your life with (friends) are the mist judgmental.

You know...I have asked myself, usually in a therapy session, "WWSDD?"

Maybe we can sell mugs that say that next to the tshirts that say Ack.
