Today, my therapist forgot the name of someone that I've been talking about for almost 2 years! She doesn't take notes during our sessions, but I'd like to think that the last 10 minutes of the hour are for her to write some notes or review notes prior to the next person coming in. I think that's a basic service and I don't think that I'm expecting too much, do you?

My last therapist never took notes at all and told me that she just had a great memory which she did! Her memory was astonishing.

My therapist was always forgetting names, but as someone who is personally horrible with names (a terrible trait for a teacher but I haven't been able to get any better about it over the years for some reason and I have made very concerted efforts at it), I'm pretty forgiving about it. I know when I can't pull up a student's name, it has absolutely nothing to do with my feelings for them -- I just have a crappy memory for names.
Thanks for this!

I must fess up to having a terrible memory for names as well. My therapist just asked me the name of someone that I talk about all the time, and I've been seeing him for years. I feel like as long as he can keep this person's role and basic characteristics straight, we're good.

But I know some things just bother us - I'm sorry this upset you!
Thanks for this!

That's how I always felt about it. He never forgot who played what role, etc., just occasionally mixed up or forgot names -- the bigger importance for me is that he remembered their role/personality, etc.

Oh, about the notes. My T took notes, but I don't know that reviewing his notes from the week or two before for a few minutes would help much. I've seen his notes and they never were filled with specifics like people's names, etc., so they wouldn't help much that way. He might have written down a name at some point over the years, but it might be buried somewhere in years of notes.
Thanks for this!

Frankly I don't think the one I see would remember my name except for the fact that she writes it down on her appointment book. She used to take notes - but as far as I could see, the notes had nothing to do with what I was saying and possibly nothing to do with me at all. She could well have been making her weekly shopping list. The woman has a memory like a sieve.

I feel for you and that frustration these things can bring. Is this the only time she has forgotten or has it happened several times? As you I think you should expect that a T remembers but if he/she forgets only once I would let it pass or perhaps I´d ask the T or say something like "I´ve mentioned this name several times, you know it´s XX?

My t has great memory and she never takes notes. I on the other hand have bad memory. Forgetting a name of someone isn't a big deal in my opinion. If she forgot yours id be a bit weirded out

So if someone forgets someone else's name it makes them robots? Really? It's such a basic occurrence for people forget things especially with age. Therapists are people like everyone else. It's human to forget things
