There was recently a thread about what song reminds people of their T. But what about those random song (or movie) references that come up during session?

So today, my marriage counselor was making this rather complex comparison of driving when it's windy out, and how he can't see the wind, but he knows it's there, so he has to compensate for it. (He was comparing that to stuff from my past, like childhood, that's affecting me now, so I have to be aware of it in my relationships.) In summing that up, he was like, "So, remember, it's like the wind."

Which made me think of the song "She's Like the Wind" by Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing. So of course I had to mention that (I mentioned movie, too). MC, laughing, was like, "So tonight, I'll have to tell my wife that I made one of my patients think of 'Dirty Dancing.'" (He, uh, does not resemble Patrick Swayze.) I was like, "The song, not the movie!" He started to say how his wife would react (making fun of him), but then said his teen daughter would get there first. I was like, "I'm glad I can give your family some laughs!" It lightened up a kind of heavier session.

I'd like to apologize if I put the song I listed in anyone's head. I fear it's now stuck in mine forever!

During a session with my long term t years ago I accidentally let the cat out of the bag that singer Eliot smith either killed himself or was murdered by his girlfriend. Didn't know t was a fan but he was and stopped me whoa whoa whoa what do you mean Eliot smith is dead? I had just talked to my therapist about an obscure indie movie called thumbsucker which I can oddly relate to (not literally but the themes are compelling). The soundtrack is part Eliot smith and part polyphonic spree because the former died in the middle of production. Anyways shocked my t Not a funny story I suppose but it does fall under the random category

I don't think a song has ever come up in my therapy. The only movie that ever came up, not surprisingly, was "Inside Out."

I do however often use historical events as metaphors for my state of mind. They might as well learn a little something while they're trying to help me.

this is the song:

There's a spider (spider, spider)
He's deep in my soul (soul)
He's lived here for years (years)
He just won't let go
He's laying around
He's got a mean bite
Now he's ready to fight...
And stand up for what he knows...
I don't need your trophies or your gold
I just want to tell you all
Go **** yourselves...
Go **** yourselves...
Go **** yourselves...
I really mean to tell you
**** you mother****ers
I don't need you in my bar...

T has made a couple of random song references (Sting and Joan Armatrading) but I'm not a massive fan of either so I didn't have much to say. There's not much point talking to him about my music as he won't have heard of any of it.
We have a lot more in common film-wise. We've talked a bit about Bladerunner and some other films. (He also suggested Inside Out). I like that he can relate to the kind of films I like. We don't have a lot of hobbies in common so this is one at least.

Actually I forgot I talked to him about a song called Bull Spears which reminds me of a traumatic experience I had. It's the urgent pace of the song and the lines

"Photograph" by Def Leopard, it's also the ringtone for when my therapist calls, not sure if the ringtone is the reason that song often pops into my head during therapy, or if I picked that ringtone for her because the song kept popping in my head during therapy

Because I'm a music student, this is a topic that comes up on a regular basis with my uni therapist. We have discussed opera (which she loves) as I am a classically trained singer. She is always saying that she would love to hear me sing, and she even picked a song, a piece called "Dido's Lament" which is the saddest thing ever, lol. But she thinks it is beautiful and has apparently told her children she wants it for her funeral. I said I would sing it.

I told her about my "operafying" game that I usually play with my best friend. We pick a pop song and then I turn it into an aria. She thought it was fantastic, and in the following session she said she had been listening to Elton John on her drive in to work that day, and she'd wondered what it would sound like if it was operafied. I was quite amused by that.

We have also talked about the movie "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" and how the music is an important part of the narrative because the horse doesn't talk. The music speaks for him. I have told her to go watch it. She says her daughter loves the movie and has also told her to watch it in the past. I am writing an essay about music in animation, so we've had a few conversations about it.

Ok so I know this is supposed to be a fun thread. But I have to share this. I had ET with my first female T. Also maternal transference. Anyway, she played this song for me in session and said it made her think of me. It's called Ever So Lonely, and it's sung by Sheila Chandra I believe. I'll post lyrics below. I was convinced she liked me after this, because of the lyrics. Just shows you how your mind can really reach when you want to believe something is true. Here are the lyrics. And by the way, after I told her I had ET, her rates skyrocketed and I couldn't afford her (she didn't accept insurance). Literally $45 to $65 to $90 to $120. I left. I must have really disgusted her. Her reason for thinking of me with the song was that my love refused no one (I'm bisexual)... but I took it the wrong way

Ever so lonely
Ever so lonely without you
Ever so lonely

Sinking into your eyes
And all I see
Love is an ocean and you for me

Sinking into your eyes
Your eyes
Are all I see
Your love is an ocean

An ocean refuses no river
Ever so lonely
\n An ocean refuses no river
Waiting for the time
When we can be
Alone together
Alone together eternally

The ocean, the ocean refuses no river
The ocean, your ocean refuses no river
Ever so lonely
Ever so lonely without you
Your ocean
Your ocean refuses no river

We've had " Magic " from the film Xanadu and " Arrival of the birds " and " Transformation " from The Crimson Wing - mystery of the flamingos. He was a musician before becoming a T so music is important for us.
