So I have had four sessions with my therapist and im unsure about it. It just seems like he'll ask one question and I answer. But then I end up going off track and he doesn't help steer me back on on track. He'll listen to everything that I say, but has little input. A lot of the stuff he talks about are coping skills. Im after getting to the root of my problems, not just coping with them. Sure after each session I think more clearly and that allows me to come up with my own theories. It's nice to decompress and learn coping skills. But it's not my true goal. So frustrating

4 sessions doesn't seem very long at all, but can you ask him about progress or if he has a therapeutic 'plan' (even if a loose one) re tackling your issues?

I've found ts really variable, depending on orientation, and even within that, wildly diverse.

So maybe it's just not a fit? Or maybe he wants to make sure you have the ability to keep yourself safe snd stable before digging too deep?

I'd bring it up with him, but preface it with 'it's only been four sessions but here's what I've noticed...'

I agree that 4 sessions in may be too soon to get to the deep stuff. Often clients need more time to open up about the hard stuff. And what Longing said-he may well be making sure you are safe before going after anything.

On the other hand, some ts think that letting the client lead is a good idea, which may leave you feeling like you just ramble if you are looking for more direction from t.

I think it is fine to tell t what you are thinking and see how he answers.

Sorry I haven't kept up with this thread. I had a crazy few days.

Im sure 4 sessions isn't long enough. But since I only see him every other week; spending 2 months without any notable progress is a real downer. "Try these coping skills" "you need to loose weight", "just stop the thoughts". Really starting to sound like a broken record at this point.

They're not miracle workers. What would you want your T to say to you?

My T repeats things to me. It helps ingraine it.

Why not talk to your T about it?

I'm well aware that he's trying too help. Im going to ask next week about his plan for me.

Honestly I don't know what I want from him or anyone for that matter. Im just venting because im extremely frustrated with myself.

Perhaps he is a little too goal-oriented for you. Some T's are very goal-oriented and that wouldn't work well for me. How about having a discussion about his therapeutic orientation, and if you feel he's not working for you, you could look for a more person-centred or psychodynamic T.

Looked up psychodynamic therapy and I like the sound of it.
