As the title says I had my first visit today with my new therapist. It went well but too early to tell where this will go.
I'm new here and not quite sure how to navigate the site yet or if I'm posting in the right place.
I've been reading some posts to see what I should even expect in these sessions.
So, I'm new to the therapy and the site.

Welcome! Going to therapy at first is certainly intimidating, so congratulations on taking the first steps toward your recovery/a healthier tomorrow.

If I had one piece of advice to give you, it would be to make sure your therapist is a proper fit. It might take a few sessions to really get a feel for how your relationship with your therapist will be, but you’ll get to a point where you’ll really know if the person isn’t right for you. If you’re feeling like that, trust your guy, and also make that feeling be known to the therapist. They shouldn’t take it personally (it’s their job not to!), and sometimes it takes some shopping around to find the right therapist.

Best of luck to you in everything. The community here is very supportive!
Thanks for this!

Welcome, I'm relatively new, too, but I find this site very informative and full highly intelligent and caring people. Hope it will be useful to you and that you'll find the info and support you need 😊

This will be my second try. The first one was not a good fit and did some things that were not very professional. It was going no where every visit. The first one was more or less a social worker, I forget his title. This new one is a psychologist. Hope she knows a little more about what she is doing.
This has been a long time coming for me and a big step.

I was very pleased with my first session. She was very engaged with the conversation. Seemed very interested in my situation. I had questions for her and she was more than willing to answer them.
I should add that this is through the VA so it's no cost to me.
She said she has been working with veterans for 3 years now and specializes in Combat PTSD and physical and sexual abuse PTSD.

The first therapist would not even look at me when talking. He didn't take any time to find anything out about me and would not answer any questions. He said he was there to ask the questions but he didn't ask many. Just wanted you jump right into a textbook cure. I went for about 6 weeks and we never really got started on anything. He would explain the program, had me watch a few videos and basically kept telling me how successful the program is. I looked at his notes on my chart and he was writing things that had never taken place. I ended up filing a complaint about him and quit going. I was eventually asked if I would be willing to sit down and confront him with his supervisor in the room, I said I would but it never happened.

The P doc finally asked if I was willing to try another therapist to see if it would be a better fit. So here I am. Next appointment is next Friday.
Thanks for this!

Welcome! I'm glad things went well with the new T. The old T sounds dreadful. Good luck with everything.

Hello, welcome.
I'm glad you went to get help. Therapy makes you see things from another angle. You will see that life is a cube from which you were close to only one face, in time you will move away and see the other faces.
It's so good when you create intimacy with your therapist to the point of thinking, "Oh, wait until my therapist hears this one"
Therapy is a gift, everyone should do.
But if you feel that things are not going very well with your therapist, you can change as well. Until you find the right one.

Well, I had my second visit this past week. Looks like it will be a weekly thing. Still in the early stages right now. She is asking a lot of questions and taking notes on my answers. Still in the getting acquainted stage of things. This is all new to me so not quite sure what to expect each week.
