You've completely lost me here. How do police, etc allow me to drive, etc?

And while the Constitution gives me certain protections by law, the groups mentioned have nothing to do with insuring that those protections remain viable.

Perhaps we'd be better off thanking the Federal Courts for their service..

I love Hoarders. When I start watching my house seems like a mess...but after about 10 minutes of that show I look around and suddenly it looks much better, with no effort on my part at all.

I was temporarily baffled as to why you should be so strongly against eating peas with a fork. But now I understand.

In my country, we trust our police and think they are great. But of course, we have gun control and the police don't live in constant fear of being shot.

I have a friend who joined the military to get their medical education paid for. When they went to the sandy places, it was like cushy camp for them. It's the young, poor, and minorities who get sent to do the dirty work. It's a abominable system and I don't have any hope that this will ever change. Whatever benefits society thinks it gains are completely overshadowed by the traumatized masses who return to poor or no care, and their families who suffer. In my county, with a military base, the rate of child abuse skyrocketed in the years after 911. Really, everyone is "serving" or paying the price, except for the upper echelon. As per usual.

About eating peas... I was traveling through the Netherlands a long time ago, visiting with a classmate's soon to be in-laws who did not know I was American, as I spoke another language and had just come from another country where I was studying with the classmate. They went on and on about how barbaric Americans are when we eat, showing each other how we shovel food in with the right hand. It was pretty awesome to behold.

I don’t know if this is really the case (since I don’t have a TV) but one of my ex-es who studies this sort of thing used to point out how ads to join the military played much more frequently on channels more likely to be watched by racial minorities.

I'm an American, and I'm usually pleased with myself when I manage to use a fork instead of my hands. The left hand/right hand fork/knife thing is beyond me.

When I was a kid, my dad read us etiquette rules about introductions from some business textbook he had. Like you introduce the person who has more power to the person who has less or something? My inability to get that down, plus my lack of golf prowess, is the only reason I never managed to become a business tycoon.
Thanks for this!

I’ve heard a lot from Europeans on how Americans have bizarre, wasteful habits when it comes to food.

But, I’m not sure if there isn’t a fair bit of stereotyping that goes on (on both sides of course — see the exoticizing of all things French woman for example)?

I retrained myself as a teenager to eat the European way--knife left hand, fork right hand, fork tines down, not up as though it were some kind of spoon. It helped my Irish mother already ate that way. It's so much easier and looks so much better.

Besides, what if I ever become a spy and right hand knife/left hand fork gave me away in Russia or something? One must take all eventualities into account.

What does Piaf have to do with Ayn Rand?

Sorry, you're going to have to ruin the joke by explaining it.

Fountainhead is a word that exists even without that (execrable — sorry, Rand fans) novel

Not much of a joke — just a play on practically.
