Taking a step back (if you'll forgive me), this is absolutely standard. I have had sessions like this myself, more than once, and you see it all the time on this forum. Ts probably have a name for it, like "Primary Attachment Crisis". On one occasion I cried for a week over Madame T. And to be brutally honest, I rather think this is the outcome that Ts are looking for.

But once you've cried enough, you don't have to cry again. This seems to be the Fundamental Theorem of Therapy.

I've just found myself taking steps two at a time. I must be happy!

Well, that didn't really go well. He was glad I shared, but some things he said made me feel like a complete burden to him. Probably not what he intended, but it's what I heard. I'm so ****ed up. I hate myself.

So, I’ve been desultorily searching for a new therapist and came across one who seems to have won awards for being the best therapist of the year or something.

Given how my brain operates, I have now immediately added “No awards for therapy” to my list of ideal therapist qualifications.
