Couch mini-poll, topic of which came up with Info Friday.

Heroes—do you have any?

I have two, basically (an athlete and a politician).

I have maybe another half dozen or so people I really admire (a couple public intellectuals, another politician, my mother, etc.).

And below that are people that I have a lot of respect for.

Is this a low number of heroes? It seems low given how often the words hero and heroism get thrown around.
Thanks for this!

You have aardvark correct - I don't think Arthur looks anything like one either. But the author seems to think that is what he is.

I'm not sure I have heroes as such. My T is probably the person I admire the most. Particularly as I have gone into the same line of work. He's a big role model for me.

I have people who I look up to as mentors or role models, but heroes? No.

I don't really have a hero but have people I admire- my parents, a few other people in my life, and Ellen DeGeneres. So no, I don't think you have a low number of heroes.

I don't get it -- she really expects you to have heroes? Why?

What's the point, really? Is it supposed to help or provide something in a way to make life better? I can't think of a reason.

If I wanted to change / improve something about myself, I'd just work on doing that -- hero or no hero?

So yeah, I am not sure I see the point of having any -- I can't think of any I do, actually.

I admire specific qualities in some folks but that's pretty much it.

I might've been more prone to awe-struck-ness when I was younger but even then, not quite to the point of considering someone a hero.

One of my college profs -- when I was gushing in the throes of her (or actually pretty much anyone) giving me attention -- wrote me an email with the subject line "Feet of clay" and the line's stuck with me (and it turned out to be totally on the nose when it came to my admiration for her as well as a whole lot of other folks I'd thought were awesome when I was younger).
Thanks for this!

No no—this is my own thing. Heroes came up because we share one.

But say my students seem to describe someone as their hero quite often. (They also often seem to regard themselves as heroes.) I’ve never had as many heroes as they seem to. I also don’t use the word to mean that they’re perfect or don’t have feet of clay; the nature of the heroism is partly in being better than their humanity.
Thanks for this!

Wikipedia never lies!

"The show is set in the fictional American city of Elwood City, and revolves around the lives of 8-year-old Arthur Read, an anthropomorphic aardvark,"

Arthur (TV series - Wikipedia)

And a PBS link 'cause y'all know I'm a tease :

Ruth Gordon. Grace Cooper. Isadora Duncan. Janis Joplin. Many women writers. Gloria Steinem. Julie Harris. Colleen Corby.

This is a good question.

Ah, okay -- but then I get caught up over consistency. And, how do I decide if the feet-of-clay actions don't negate the 'heroic' stuff?

Or maybe it's because I've been reading the news a tad much and the many many articles talking about heroism is making me think back to certain specific moments in politics when I could swear that folks now being considered heroic were anything but.

Then again though, would that be being churlish? And, in that case, the heroism as such would be about specific actions and not attached to a person? So, it could be said that X's actions were heroic but not that X themselves were heroic? And, in that way -- although seemingly mealy-mouthed -- there's more room to be all kinds of things, including terribly non-heroic?
Thanks for this!

Lemoncake, Henry Ford was virulently anti-semitic. He used his paper, The Dearborn Independent, to publish all sorts of anti-Semitic articles, the worst of which were eventually collected into a four volume work entitled The International Jew. Hitler even mentioned Ford in the first edition of Mein Kampf. Just in case you didn't know, and since you also mention admiring Anne Frank.

Oh I didn't know that. He was mentioned in another book I read ages ago about the power of persistence when it came to some of his designs and not giving up.
