Here's another idea:
Instead of saying the characters are one-dimensional, say:

"I'd like to see a bit more depth to the characters. What about a flash-back to happier times? That would flesh out the relationship and also sharpen the tragedy."

It often comes across more positive to say what you do want instead of what you don't want. Adding a concrete suggestion shows that you read the story and thought about it, and that's positive too.

I didn’t actually use the term one-dimensional, even though I meant it. I said I’d like to see a softer side to the husband and more depth to the wife.

Excellent! I'm sorry she reacted badly to that.

So she jumped on me because of course the story was autobiographical and said she knew what she was talking about because she’d been abused herself.

I feel terrible for triggering her like that. I clearly wasn’t diplomatic enough, plus she’d already been hearing critiques for an hour by that point and was probably feeling sensitive.
I would agree that the problem is hers. I have a huge trauma history and used to be a trainer in child welfare... so I would speak to groups of 10-50 from my experiences and relate them back to the training. IMO you know you are putting yourself out there and taking a risk when you do it. I got mixed responses... that was what I expected. If I could have been triggered by a response I wouldn’t use that example.

@@, it was honest feedback on the writing, not the writer. Sometimes in autobiographical writing, the writer forgets to leave room for the reader.

@@.. the woman chose to be in the group. She can leave whenever she wants. I feel bad for what’s happened to her but she knew going in that her stuff was going to be critiqued. I can understand feeling slightly frustrated or sensitive after sitting through an hour of other people telling you how something you wrote can be changed. I can even understand not wanting to hear what you told her about showing showing a softer side of the man, but if she wants pursue writing then she will have to sit through much more of that and also rejection. If she can’t handle it then she can just write and keep her stuff for herself.

My house is cold but the temp today is supposed to get up into the 80s. We are in the ping pong phase of temperatures around here and are bouncing between winter (30's) and Summer (80's) with actual spring eluding us at every turn.

'Self-medicating with food' - that puts it into perspective. Thank you.

I recognise that behaviour, and am currently also engaged.

Next didactic session (Friday) is about trauma-informed primary care.

I want to start by somehow acknowledging that I'm going to be talking about trauma and that this can be challenging to discuss but I'm not totally sure how to go about that.

Hi Couchies, I'm not feeling as abandoned by T today so I guess that's progress. I'm still upset that I didn't get my session and won't get my session until the 6th, but my emotions aren't so raw and all over the place like they were yesterday...no crying today, at least not yet. I'm invited to a Church member's house on Good Friday for communion and I'm really looking forward to that, since our Church isn't having a Good Friday service. I'm glad Lent is almost over but it means I have a decision to make and I'm afraid I'm going to make the wrong one. HUGS Kit

I am dawdling this morning. After 2 nights of relatively mild dreams (my most vivid dream Saturday night was about eating broccoli--any takers on analyzing that one?), I had doozies of nightmares last night and woke with a stomachache and headache again. I'm trying to figure out if I ate or did anything similar Friday night and last night, and whether the headache/stomachache are triggering the nightmares or the other way round.

I want to go back to bed, but...work.

I’m annoyed that I’m seeing wrongdoing not being punished enough. There was a local GoFundMe scam. The people that were involved scammed people out of $400,000. One of the people were sentenced on Friday and he only got 5 years probation and had to commit to inpatient rehab. I’m not saying jail is the answer but I wanted to see more happen. I feel like they let him skate by.
