I am going to a pdoc for the first time and im scared. Well my first time since an adult. My mom would threaten to send me to one every time i cried. I am afraid my T will go away or they will put me in the hospital. I cannot be in small enclosed locked places it makes me freak out. My T has been trying to get me to go for a year but i have refused. I have to trust her but trust if very hard for me. I am crying inside all the time. Divorce, abuse, domestic and childhood. PTSD-DID Atachement disorder AHHHHH freaking out just want to be ok again.

Congrats on making the step toward getting help. Your right, it is "scary" but it gets much easier trust me. It's a lot different from being a child in therapy or who sees a psychiatrist. I'm glad I wasn't turned off completely due to my previous bad experiences.

I have to tell you that a Therapist is not a Psychiatrist (PDOC) though, and that you should realize before you go to a PDOC that they are mostly oriented toward medication management, and that's it. Most of them do not have the training to conduct therapy, and most of them spend very little time with the patient.

The best approach is to seek counseling from a clinical or counseling psychologist who has a PhD. in Psychology, which is who you will get your therapy from on at least a weekly basis. The PDOC might not be all that you think he is, and medication alone is seldom the answer. Usually, a T. who has been around awhile will refer you if he thinks it is necessary-- to a psychiatrist or primary care physician, and the T. and PDOC or PCP will communicate with each other (with a signed consent from you of course). This approach seems to work best, and all bases are covered. Some people don't even need medicine, which is great.

Did you make an appointment with a psychiatrist(PDOC) or psychologist(T)?

Seeing a pdoc for the first time is always a bit scary but the first appointment is usually just really an intake assessment where they want to know your history, what's going on, and try to figure out if meds will help you. Some pdocs do do therapy, others are purely meds management. I'm lucky my pdoc does both so I see her once a month for an hour and we talk about how things are going, as well as how I'm reacting to my meds.

You might want to try to find a Pdoc and or a T who specialize in trauma. Both of mine do, and that's been incredibly helpful to me.

My T encouraged me to see a pdoc too. It took her awile to get me to agree to go. My T went with me to the very first appointment...well...she went with the one who needed to go (DID involved here). This made a huge difference. My T and pdoc practice in the same building/company; T is a partner and pdoc is not, so is sort of an employee of my T's...this made it much easier for T to accompany me. Would T going with you or maybe talking to ou right before and then right after, be helpful...or even possible?
