I had about 5 sessions with my T...and i absolutely think shes great...she just fits youknow? but im off to college the 20th of August and i would really like to have a therapist there, cause i know the stress's of it all will most likely overtake me and worry me to bits...but id starting over with someone just seems like putting what ive done with my T, to waste. Plus id need to start all over...idk if i do start over, thats fine....but when i come home...would it be appropriate to start up again with my T i have now? or should i just drop her completely....again, i really like her and she seems to overall understand me...thats not saying much since ive only known her for 5 hours....
-thanks for reading that marathon of a post

If you go to Student Counseling/Student Health on campus, you will more than likely get a substandard therapist (some exceptions of course). They usually have limits on how many sessions and the types of issues, and often they try to get you an appointment with a graduate student in training for psychology, which means they won't have the training. Ask your therapist first if he/she knows anyone in the area. Otherwise, I would go to the American Psychology Association nationwide/statewide listing of psychologists. When you select a psychologist from the listings, put their license number or name in the online state database to see if they have any violations against them. If they are clean, call them up. Make sure your parents insurance will cover the visit. It's always okay to see your therapist when you are living at home. It's not really stressful if you use a search engine on the internet to find the webpages you need. I'd look up the links myself but I'm too tired and going to bed. Goodluck-

I was fortunate enough to go to a major university that offered its students top-notch counselling services. Since my 'alma mater' also has a medical school, both psychological and psychiatric services were available, with well-qualified, experienced therapists (not grad students). I would recommend that you search your future school's website. The kinds of counselling services and the therapists that the school offers is usually listed under 'Student Services'. Good luck! |

I know some here have found wonderful t at school. Hopefully some will respond and give you thier first hand experiences. You can always go talk to them and see what you think and what their qualifications are and if you are dissatisfied just don't go back or ask for another. They will understand. Good luck.

When my older children went off to college, they used the counseling services offered at "Student Services". They both received great care and were sad to leave their Ts upon graduation.

One thing that can really good for you is that being seen by someone either on-campus, or referred off-campus, is that those people (presumably) will be specialists (in practical terms) in dealing with people your age with all that means in terms of family/parent situation, being on your own, starting college, etc. Out here in the non-campus world, most of us don’t run into people who have particular experience with our “type,” so to speak.
As far as what to do with the T you've been seeing, etc.....see what everyone thinks. Your old T or the new T that you get might differ on the issue, surely months down the road you'll know better what you want. It's great that you're thinking ahead. I'd get to it right away when you get there because there probably will be a rush of others in the same situation.

I'm sure that it depends on the person. Most psychologists I would wager wouldn't go through all that school just to work in student services (unless they didn't want to be held accountable perhaps). In the private sector, patients don't see you and your business stagnates if you aren't any good. I also don't want to see a graduate student if the "real" therapists have full calendars. I say if you have private insurance, go off campus for a better experience.

I received care from my Student Health Services at university. The counselling side of things only offered twelve sessions but offered to help me find a free counsellor at the end of the twelve sessions. The psychiatric side of things was ok, I got to see a psychiatrist every two weeks and receive medications. The initial interview was pretty extensive and she put me in touch with a good ptsd clinic. As far as find a therapist, I would still recommend you seek someone in the community, as the school ones, you may end up with a graduate student or the therapist you end up with may not be as accessable on weekends and with emergency calls as an outside one. I find the school therapists are mostly overworked and do not devote as much time and effort as someone in the community.
Good luck with your university career tho!!!
