And its interesting what you said about reading. All testing shows she cannot read a paragraph and understand it yet she reads large fiction books and loves them so yes, fiction is no problem but non fiction she seems not to understand.
All talents and hobbies are gone too. She can cope for about 5 minutes and then it is too much for her to handle.
I would love to take her off all meds forever if that is what is causing her IQ to go down. I have always been anti med.
But then I remember how she was before. She has been in psychosis literally most of her life with just short periods of being in the 'real world'. I would get rid of all the damn meds but I dont want her to go back to that.

Well not to be too discouraging but they have basically shown that the meds cause a certain level of brain loss over time...a lot of that used to be attributed to the disease but now based on animal studies and medicated vs non medicated people they know it's the drugs...all those classic images that show differences between people which sz vs controls those were people on meds...still if I had to choose psychosis or meds I would choose meds even knowing the risk...it's a quality of life thing...I mean with full psychosis I could never hold down a job or probably even keep my friends because of the way I was thinking and interacting and you seem to develop more delusions over time so if one doesn't apply there is always another...

Have you ever tried any cognitive remediation with her to take advantage of neuroplasticity? She is still young so her brain should be pretty flexible. You might want to read about Barbara Arrowsmith....there are special schools that focus on people who think differently....arrowsmith was amazing she read about brain theory with some difficulty and designed work that would fix her own brain because she had a learning disability and now she does this for other kids some of the exercises seem weird like learning to read analog clocks or wearing an eyepatch over one eye but they are specifically designed to deal with certain brain connectivity issues. They have to be repeated to solidify the connections In the brain. She only vaguely discusses the techniques in her book but her techniques are so successful that she basically sells packages to schools to use the methods so it's possible you could convince a local school to pick it up you know.

Anyway check out her website...

Barbara Arrowsmith Young | | Barbara Arrowsmith Young

Another thing to check out is posit...they are devolving software that was based on actual testing of people with sz and cognitive remediation...
Brain Training Software, Brain Fitness, Brain Games, BrainHQ - Posit Science | Your Brain Health Headquarters

Both of these types of programs are a lot of sort of boring work but seem to result in permanent gains to thinking and brain function...so there is natural modification of brain connectivity that can really improve things...

Hi ,

I could be way off but havin read your posts on roll call i thought you were improving up until a few days ago. Genuinely . And then i read your ppsts in the last few days and they were a big departure from an upward trend you had in terms of your insight. I am not qualified in any psychological field but i still want to contribute with my view. Are you afraid of getting better? Genuine question.

no i dont think im afraid of getting better. i just may be having a downward spiral again i dont know. ive had a rough few days. i just got out of the hospital and on a new med that i learned was in the same class as zoloft and prozac which made me homicidal and psychotic. it could be the pill. it could just be me going down again. i dont know.

Its interesting that you mention these things.
Her aid at school has her using a program on the computer that sounds similar to this. I am going to look and find out what the program is. Thank you!

I'm in a fowl/depressed mood. Then again I've been off my meds for the past few days. I go and try to be helpful in the schizoaffective thread but I mistakenly thought schizoaffective disorder was a mild (my mistake is that it can range from any severity of schizophrenia) schizophrenia with a mood disorder and I get talked down on by someone there because I used mild. It was an honest misunderstanding. Then again I wasn't very nice either after I got my "lecture" used a cuss word and told them to shove it (administrator removed it). People piss me off and I seem to piss other people off. It's like I can't win.

Well it's not mild but it does have a better prognosis...so maybe that's what you were thinking? Eh sometimes you just can push people's buttons without meaning to...don't let it stop you from trying to help...

Yeah, I think so. I've read up about it before but it was a while back.

in the darkest areas of my world i sit and pray. i rock back and forth and i weigh out out the pros and cons of life. this world is strife. the hallucinations hit me like being raped in a dark alley way. the paranoia is worse. i pray for them to go away but it never works. im in a trapped double mirror circus. im like the darkest child.

One should be enough I don't think you actually get more energy by taking two---caffeine works by blocking adenosine receptors and you can only block them so much....

My new pdoc is Indian and she is very nice---a lot of my friends are Indian...if they are here then they are among the smartest and best of their country and because it was a British colony their English is often better than mine---one of my former labmates actually went to Oxford so you might get the occasional odd reference to the boot of a car or something but other than that, better English than mine for sure....

there's a big shortage of pdocs in this country, actually. I wonder if there is something about Indian culture that makes them more likely to go into psychiatry, because you've mentioned this before. Or maybe there is just a bigger Indian population where you live. Where I live all of the pdocs are white people.

Same thing the primary stimulus is caffeine---so I wouldn't take them together but if you feel the first dose of caffeine wearing off then go ahead and have a cup it will keep you from crashing...just avoid it within like 4 hours of bedtime so you can fall asleep.

There are definitely regional preferences for all the races and while we do get a lot of Indian people in Chicago there were not in Michigan or Minnesota at least when I lived there but there is also a preference for warmer areas like Arizona among people I know. People tend to pick areas that remind them of home. In this area there are way more GPs who are Indian than psychs so I'm not sure about the preference thing. My other pdoc was hispanic only the older pdocs around here tend to be white dudes, the young ones are pretty diverse. Its actually really nice because they tend to have multiple language options for people.

No I just thought you might have trouble understanding their language---I know in undergrad I had trouble with TA's understanding the way they spoke but I haven't had that same issue with MD's or PhD's they tend to be highly selected.
