Hello. So I always get panic attacks at school and rarely at home. I had a terrible panic attack today in fact. So someone I knew said I should tell the special education office or whatever (I have an IEP because of massive anxiety). I usually get panic attacks at school once to twice a week, depending if I have band or not (which is a major trigger for me!). So apparently tomorrow I have to develop so coping strategy thing or whatever. I mean, I have tried. I know a lot of things to help prevent them, and I know some for during it, but nothing has seem to work. I would like to try something PRN for my panic attacks, but my pdoc said no to that so I move on. Does anyone else have panic attacks in school, university, college, whatever? What do you do about it? This would really help me. I have tried to go through it but I feel like crap after. Thanks for the response .

I'm going to reply to this soon, but can't right now. But I don't want to lose the post so I'm posting this now. Super busy right now. I promise I'll get back to you.

Well, Nike007, I don't know if what I've experienced in my life can actually be called a "panic attack". I have the impression that, in order for something to be called a panic attack, it needs to come on suddenly. In my case, I have always just become increasingly anxious until it would become almost unbearable... sometimes it was unbearable! I have to admit that what I did, over the years, was to just tough it out... sometimes to my embarrassment. And gradually, over the years, it has gotten better. Although it is also true that, at this point in my life, I just pretty-much keep to myself. I don't recommend the "though-it-out" approach. And you don't have the option of keeping to yourself at this point in your life... not that I would recommend this either... even if you did!

That said, I guess I don't have any particularly good suggestions for you. I think that meditation can help... long term... It's not a quick fix. Also physical exercise is good for calming the emotions in general. Beyond that, if you're seeing a therapist, it might be beneficial to talk with this person about what you're experiencing. One of the concerns here is that this predisposition toward having panic attacks is probably not going to be limited to your current school situation. If it turns out to be... great! But it is certainly possible, maybe even probable, that it will carry over into whatever you do once you graduate. (It did with me.) So, from my perspective, I think it is important to figure out what's going on with you that is causing you to have these experiences. This is what therapy is for. The only other thought that occurs to me, with regard to this is that, at least in the past, systematic relaxation used to be used for these sorts of things. I recall, when I was in college, I saw a school counselor there, for a while. They had this darkened room with a recliner that I would go into where I'd listen to relaxation audiotapes.

Good luck with this. I know how difficult it can be...

I did today, once I got over the worst of it the nurseBtried an exercise with me where she would get me to list 5 things I see in the room, 5 things I hear, 5 things I feel, 5 things I think are peaceful, and 5 things I think are pretty/beautiful

That could work. I am going to be seeing a "Child and Youth Worker" in my school to get some coping strategies when I get a panic attack. I get them unexpectedly once a month or so but I have been worrying of getting another one for a few days like 24/7. It's terrible Panic attacks and school.

Nike007, I understand what you might be going through. I wanted to know what exactly triggers your panic attack at school?

I am not sure actually. I know sometimes it is because of social presentations, but I usually get ones where I don't know what has triggered it.

I don't know if this will help, but sometimes I get anxious at school, or when something triggers me I just take a deep breath and talk to the person next to me for a second. If I can't talk to someone, I just really think about the work Im doing or the topic we are talking about and try to take a deep breath and think about other things. Maybe carrying a stress ball might help.

Thanks for the advice. When I'm having a panic attack though, I can't concentrate at all, so talking and working is impossible for me. Thanks for trying to help. Breathing doesn't work really also.

at 1 stage, i had a teacher who would take me to a quiet room, and talk to me for about 20 minits in a calm voice. she then used to know all the things i liked doing, so she'd get me to 1 of those things while the rest of the class worked. and it would be in a room on my own. it always worked

i should add that the only bad thing about this, is that i ended up failing everything

well, it was a contributing factor. all the hospital stays didn't help me either- especially since by the time i got back out i'd missed half the course
Thanks for this!
