I badly want to go swimming at the public pool. It's a long walk though from the changing room to the pool itself (well, not actually a long distance, but it feels a long way wearing just a bathing suit). And the problem is, I'm kind of embarrassed about my scars and since they are on my legs I can't hide them like I could if they were on my arms. Would it appear so very strange if I were to walk to the pool wrapped in my towel? Another problem is that the water is stored right up to the very edge of the pool and laps over, and I don't know where I would be able to store my towl, other than by the wall when I enter the pool room. Has anybody got any alternative suggestions?

I think they sell something called a cover-up...may have a different name in the UK. It's designed for you to wear over your bathing suit right up to the point where you get in the water, I believe. It covers up, as the name implies, but is fairly normal-looking and probably wouldn't draw a lot of attention.

Yep, Ben suggested what I was going to. I have three.
![]() Ok, off track there. The cover ups work well! At the YMCA, I keep mine on the entire time, even in the water sometimes. They have longer ones and shorter ones. Here's several examples, silver. These are all the shorter versions, but they have the longer ones as well. Just take it off right at the pool or even in the water if you want. They're called "swim skirts". http://www.venusswimwear.com/xq/aspx...x/products.htm gl! KD

mmmhh.. the cover ups seems like a good idea. I don't know if this will help at all, but several things come to my mind... what about a tanning lotion that is water proof?? if you ever use those... it might draw attention away from the scars? but you should try this ahead of time to "test" it...then what about something really distracting, like anklets or even bracelets to draw attention away from your legs... also, as difficult as we all know this is, trust me, you'd be surprised to know how few people will closely examine your legs upon walking into the pool.... they're busy w/ themselves, their own worries about their bodies and if you walk in confident, w/ a bright smile on your face or just "incognito" lol, then they'll be more focused on your face or won't even notice... in the end, these are the kind of things that prevent us from enjoying life, and you know, coming from a background w/ ed's and si, I am so sick of this sometimes..... it shouldn't keep you from doing what you want to do... but I know it's all easier said than done....

I swim a lot and my arms have many scars on them. I have found that most people don't even notice. Even the ones that i talk to as I get into the pool. I like the idea of some of things for you to wear to help with your self consciousness. You can just leave at the edge of the lane you are swimming in. It may get a little wet but it will be there when you get out.

i have a pool in my town just like that. I would not pay any attention to what others think. easier said than done right. I know i need to take my own advice to. but with swimming i do. I love to swim. Just walk out there boldly. And jump right in. Many people dont look at ur legs when ur walking or in the pool. They mostly focus on ur face and upper abdomen. Beleive me guys loook at girls and girls look at guys. (nothing like a 6 pack on a guy to make me melt). I wouldnt worry about it. Just walk very fast and boom ur in the pool.

I don't have any scars or anything to hide, (OK, I try to hide the 12-pak abs!!!) but definitely do not wear things like anklets that will draw people's eyes to the area you want to hide. The best way to hide is in plain sight. Be as natural as you can be, act like there's nothing wrong at all (which, by the way, there isn't). If anyone asks, make up a story about alien abduction or something LOL !!

Yeah but the problem is that most of the scars are on my lower legs and are purple, and they are clearly not natural

I have a huge scar on my leg from a skin graft, I have got used to it and have the confidence to go swimming with it showing which has been good for my physiotherapy. However it makes my partner uncomfortable to come swimming with me because of it. Is there some kind of waterproof skin coloured sleeve you can wear while swimming.
