I've read in the neswpaper that Wellbutrin and Prozac and other anti-deppressants can cause the users to have suicidal tendencies. I wanted to know if this was true for everyone who uses these medicines. I've been using Prozac and Wellbutrin for several months now. At first they made me feel better. But lately I've been thinking alot about suicide. Could it be the medicine or the depression?

I am not on either drug, but it may be indicative of the need for a higher dose. It would be best if you discussed your concerns with your doctor. Or you could do your own research on the Internet.

I was on both of them when i tired to kill myself. I really cannot tell if it was the result of the meds or what was going on in my life that caused me to flip out. It is really difficult to pull the two apart sometimes because the question has to be asked would someone have tried to kill themselves depending on the situation even if they were not on the meds?
I think a lot of the problems that have come up with the two causing suicide attempts have stemmed from the abrupt stop of taking the meds. The only advice I can give is just be careful and watch your emotions. If you notice anything does not feel right talk to your doctor right away.

Stay strong,
Jessica

The way I understand it, the meds do not cause the suicidal tendencies. People who are very depressed and suicidal may not try it because they are so depressed that they have no energy, so they don't act on it. With or without meds, when this person starts to recover and get a little bit of energy back, but still are not feeling all that good yet, that is when there is the most risk for suicide. So it is important for people who are starting to recover from depression to be monitored.

If you are thinking about suicide or are worried about it, you should talk to your doctor about it. But if you aren't suicidal, I don't think that you need to be overly concerned about the new warning.

I am just following Rapunzel around today saying "Listen to what she says." I will add my experience though. My suicidal thoughts increased with prozac. Don't know why, I think it is was because I became more depressed on it. Wellbutrin helped my depression but I continued to have suicidal thoughts in triggering moments. I do not believe it was the medication. I believe with prozac it wasn't the right med and my depression continued to spiral downwards. With wellbutrin I think it was something psychological, suicide was always an option for me, knowing I could kill myself gave me control of my life. This of course is not a mentally healthy stance but it wasn't the medication's fault.

<font color=green>But the implicit and usually unconscious bargain we make with ourselves is that, yes, we want to be healed, we want to be made whole, we're willing to go some distance, but we're not willing to question the fundamental assumptions upon which our way of life has been built, both personally and societally.--Bill Plotkin, Soulcraft
