I had my second session with my image consultant on Fri. This one was on hair, makeup, and accessories. She approves of my hair just thinks I need to brush my bangs differently which although a small change did make a big difference.
Then we got to the make up question. I'm 42 - I never wear makeup never have except when I was a teen experimenting with it. See the thing is I grew up with out a mother or sisters, to show me how to do it, and I've always felt comfortable without it. So I told the consultant that there was no way I was going to start wearing foundation and stuff, but she suggested that I had really nice eyes and that a little bit of eyeliner would make them stand out more. I have really bad memories of heavy eyeliner pencils, so I said there was no way I wanted to look like a racoon. So she suggested powedered eyeliner applied with a really narrow brush. I agreed to try it so we found an eye shadow colour that I kind of liked a sort of brownish mauve, and a medium brown eyeliner, and she did one eye then I did the other. Talk about making a huge difference, my eyes really stood out on my face and looked so much better. Then she convinced me to try lipstick which I'd sort of been thinking about anyways and we found this kind of burgundy coloured one. It looked awesome one, and again made a huge difference. It really made me look loads better and younger. So looks like I'm giving in and joining the ranks of the make up wearing. splitimage |

I've never been one to wear makeup. My mom only ever wore to it work when I was really little. Then she decided since she never enjoyed it and she stopped wearing it. My sister wears some. For years, I was very anti-make up, very much "this is who I am, love me or leave me." Then I found a boy who really dislikes make up. Fantastic! But now, it's to the point where if I even dabble in it just a little (such as recently, for my friend's wedding where I was doing a reading), and he was in the bathroom with me telling me I was putting too much on, when honestly, it barely looked like I had any.
Now I look in the mirror and just see these huge pores that I want to hide, but feel like I can't... He tells me I'm beautiful the way I am, but I don't see it, and wouldn't mind being if he could say nice things when I do wear make up (instead of, "You looked between without it" when I really, really don't agree). Honestly, I think the reason I never wore it was because I was always intimidated by it. Figured I'd put it on wrong and look silly. Then I got to be afraid of people noticing it... "What are you so dressed up for today?!" Sorry I just rambled on.. Makeup has been on my mind a lot lately... |

I love makeup, I think it's fun and it's about accenting ones natural beauty. It's something I do for myself and nobody else. I work a job that is very physcially demanding and a bit stinky at times. So I love getting to wear makeup and dress up when I am out of work.

I only ever wear it if I'm going somewhere special where I'll be meeting "important" people I don't know. I still have some of the makeup from my wedding in 1989 and other that I bought from a friend, selling it through Mary Kay or one of those party places, to help her out, that's at least five years old.

In answer to your question an image consultant: depends on the consultant but at a minimum a professional that evaluates and discusses the best look for you: hair, make-up, wardrobe, accessories to present you at your best. Some of them go as far as helping with public speaking, resumes, etc. as well to round out a professional image and that fits the field you are going into. If you are going to be working with the public, holding public office, job hunting, etc. can be highly recommended.

splitimage - how nice to hear your consultant is helping you and you like the results!
As for makeup - I've worn it since I was a teen - but learned early on that "less can be more". It should enhance your best features and cover what you view as flaws. It is my personal choice and I will never let my hub tell me whether or not I should use it - because it is my face and my perception of what I see in the mirror. Perhaps this question and our answers depend upon our age and comfort with ourselves? I am over 50, so maybe my answer during my 20's might have been different... I will admit that I rarely wear makeup on weekends and my hub still thinks I'm beautiful and loves me. ![]()

Until recently I only wore makeup for work and basically b/c I needed to. And that only started 4 years ago. Before that I worked at daycares and lets be honest no one cares what the preschool teacher looks like. It's been a learning experience for me.
I'm also not much into dressing "like a girl," except for work. But lately I'm starting to feel like its OK to dress "nice" even if its not for work or something special. And it actually makes me feel a bit better about myself. Don't mean to go off on a tangent. Thank you for this thread. Nice to know I'm not the only one out there. Good for you Splitimage. |

Yes, good for you splitimage. I think I look hideous without make up, so for me, it is a lifesaver.

Well ladies - I made my first foray into the world wearing makeup today and it was a success.
But first the getting the makeup on story. I wear glasses - I'm blind as a bat without them, so I had to get my face really close to the mirror to put it on. Then I discovered how hard it can be to just get one eyelid shut and keep it shut (it kept trembling). Eye shadow wasn't bad. But the eye-liner, that was an adventure. I kept hitting the mirror with the brush until I figured out what angle I had to hold it at. Then I got way too much on and looked like a racoon - so off it came. Attempt 2, I thought under my eyes looked ok, but I couldn't get a clean line on top. So the top got redone. Took me about 20 min to put on eyeshadow and eyeliner, and I still thought I was resembling a racoon. Lipstick was easy and I liked the colour. Well it worked. I had an appointment today with my career coach - on interviewing skills. This is the same guy who told me I needed a makeover. He's blunt. First thing he said after greeting me, was "Wow, you look really good, you look really rested or something." Then he commented that I'd gotten my hair cut and asked if I'd coloured it. I said nope, and he said, well something's different whatever it is you look really good. Not that my ego is overly invested in this guy - still it's nice to get a compliment. So I asked him at the end of the meeting if I could ask him a personal question. He said sure and I asked if my makeup was ok. He looked at my face really hard, and said he hadn't even noticed I was wearing any - just that I looked good. So I'd say the makeup experiment was successful. --splitimage |

I'm glad it's working out for you. I have never really worn make up and it's a rarity to even see me with eyeliner on. I guess that's why I'm in the forestry industry and not business.....
Nice on the make up thing, too! I always wondered about guys saying they like a girl to look "natural" but then tell her things like what this guy said about you needing a make over when you are "natural". Apparently you are able to pull off the "look like I'm naturally this hot without make up on" thing. Good job! Now teach the rest of us :P |

I should wear more make-up. It would hide me better.

I've never been into make-up and never learned all the techniques for using it. I will wear it sometimes for a special occasion. Sometimes I do wear some foundation for everyday stuff because my skin is so awful. But I don't wear heavy caked-on stuff. I am not even sure the foundation I sometimes use even helps. My skin is awful and I am sick of it but resigned to it too. I just don't care anymore. It's useless to try to hide it. I will always have bad skin. Who cares.
It's actually horrible to think that having bad skin could influence people to not hire me for a job.

I only wear makeup for special occasions because even the hypoallergenic kind leaves me wanting to scratch my face off.
But good for you for trying it and having it work! |

I can't decide if I'm amused, pissed off, or flattered. So I've had a couple of interviews and then gone to other meetings afterwards changed into normal clothes (not my interview suits) but with the makeup on, plus I've worn it a couple of days just to get practice wearing it and putting it on.
And I'm getting so many compliments. Everyone says I look great with it on, that it makes my eyes look so much brighter, and that I look awesome. I'm a little flattered, except I kind of thought I looked ok without makeup - now I'm starting to wonder. splitimage |

I feel the same way when I get compliments like that. I begin to think, well I must've looked pretty bad before. But then the rational part of my brain kicks in and says just take it as a compliment and don't read anymore into it. (Not that I always agree or listen to my rational brain, but you get the idea)

I like the make up artist on What Not to Wear because she always says - you're not covering anything up. You're taking what is already beautiful and bringing attention to it.
You have gorgeous eyes - this just makes them stand out. You have awesome bone structure and blush just makes that pop a little more. Just like - a guy is cute no matter what he is wearing. But when he puts that effort into it and wears something that accentuates the great parts of him, you pay him a compliment, right? |

Hey splitimage could you try getting a mirror that magnifies like 3 or 4 times when you look in it? I am also blind without my glasses/ contacts and the mirror doesn't make me see perfectly but I can see enough to know pretty much where to apply the eyeliner. Also if you have contacts put them in before you do the make up
