So, just to put it out there, I have PCOS and my period won't stop! Gyn. told me i am not a good candidate for birth control meds because of my history of those meds making me more depressed/suicidal. He tried to get it to stop with one med but it won't stop. He wants to put an IUD in me. But first, to stop the bleeding and to rule out cancer, he wants to do surgery to scrape the lining of the uterus out. Anyone ever had this done??? He told me it only takes a few minutes, but that he wants to put me out with general anesthesia. For those who have had this done, does it hurt? will i have like, a bunch of cramps afterwards? Also, he said it would be easier to put the IUD in a week after the surgery since the dilation or whatever, sorry if TMI.. haha... but he did tell me that putting an IUD in does hurt. I've never had kids either... But he says its pretty much all they can do to make it stop. I am on a better diet now so maybe that can help too. I told him I agreed and will do the surgery and IUD and a nurse will call me to set up the surgery sometime in the next few hours. They want it to get done as soon as possible, so probably next week, if not the week after.

I've never had the surgery, but I do have an iud. I'm guessing the one they want to use is Mirena, since the other kind can actually cause heavier bleeding.

If it is Mirena, it's the one I have. I actually had no period for over 4 years with it. I love it!

Hi (((krisakira))) --this is standard for abnormal bleeding, and surgery is referred to as a "D&C" (aka "Dilation and Decutterage"). You can google it..also, basically, they dilate your cervix and take some of the skin for analysis in your case. It is also used as an abortion technique.

I had a D&C many years ago. I had some cramping afterwards, yes.

Nastiest part was coming out of the anesthesia...

Had a Lippes loop in for some years (IUD) I did not take well to an IUD. Disrupted my natural rhythm, I had worse cramps and pain with it...perhaps the ones they make today are better? I hope so.

I wish you less cramps than I had, an end to this bleeding w/no unusual diagnosis, safe use of an IUD--sounds like nicoleb2's works well; in short I wish you all good outcomes!

I've had the surgery and it was the best thing ever! No pain, nothing and bleeding went back to normal.

I've also had the Mirena and almost Sui with it. Many other people I know (10 of us) have also had severe depressive episodes while having had it in and as soon as it came out, every one of us have been much, much better. My sister in law started SI after never having any mental health issues before and since her family was complete, she had her tubes tied.

Now, I'm not typing this to scare you, but please, please be aware of your mental state. What works for some, may hurt another.

I have had D & C surgery, as well as a hysterectomy, due to my very heavy bleeding.

The D&C was no real biggie, though I was pretty nervous beforehand too. I did expect the D&C to help relieve my symptoms, and was pretty disappointed afterwards to see that my problems continued! A myomectomy was done to remove excess tissue from my uterus, which relieved my excessive bleeding for a while and also allowed me to become pregnant.

Best wishes to you!

So i have a question about this D&C for heavy/long periods..... I'm currently on mine. But it's not real heavy anymore, kinda normal. In fact I don't know if it will stop or keep getting lighter before next wednesday when my surgery is. Would they still want to do the surgery if my period stops or becomes lighter?? Or does that defeat the purpose... ?

I'd think they'd go ahead with the D&C for the tissue sample the be sure about what's going on.

You know you're going to have all of us women right there with you in spirit next Wednesday, don't you? The circle of female care ... We are everywhere

Yeah he wants to check for cancer so I guess that could be enough reason to still do it.

thanks so much roadrunner and everyone else who have given me support here.

Well my period is pretty much gone today (don't know what it'll be doing next week though) so I called my surgeon and he said he still wants to do the surgery to test for cancer.

Well, surgery is all done! It went well and no complications from anesthesia like last time. They said I did very well I was nervous for no reason i guess. I did not aspirate like last time but my throat hurts a bit from the tube the put down it. I took a 4 hour nap and am feeling very well for my circumstances.

That is wonderful news, Kris!!! I had D & C done before also and no biggy but I am very curious about the IUD. I have never had one. The pills i am on to stop my cycles tend to be not favoured by many doctors. If an IUD would do the same...maybe I should discuss that possibility.

Well I was supposed to get an IUD put in today, and I tried, I really did try... but half way when they were dilating, it hurt too much. I was about to cry. I told him I couldn't do it anymore. So he stopped... and said that I could try again next week, and that he would give me some ativan to calm me down and this other med that relaxes the cervix (and I am thinking, why didn't I get this in the first place!!). He told me my cervix might still be sore from the surgery. Ya think!? But damn, I just could not take it anymore. I am so nervous about trying again next week. I almost don't want to go through with it, but its either that, or have excessive bleeding my whole life... wahhh (

oh and also, everything was benign as far as what they found during the D&C so at least thats good

Well I got my IUD put in today, and even though it was still very painful, I persevered! Glad all that is over...

(((Krisakira))),

Glad the D & C went well & they didn't find any cancer. I just lost a friend to cervical endometrial cancer.

All I can say is good luck with all that ... I'm so afraid to go to the Doctor that I just cancelled an appointment (3rd time) to have an ingrown toenail looked at ... I doubt I'll ever be able to have any "women stuff" looked at or tended too ... But I admire the bravery of those who can and do ... !!!

Unfortunately......that was the attitude my mother had when she ignore a "women stuff" thing at the age of 79.....& it ended up being stage 4 cancer which KILLED HER because she didn't bother taking care of it until it was too late.

I can say that it's definitely important to take care of something when it shows up......I can definitely say that the regret in the long run from ignoring it is much greater than the embarrassment of taking care of something when it's able to be treated.

Sadly, my mother's oncologist (who I didn't like in the first place & thought of him as an arrogant chauvinist) thought of her as an "OLD FOOL" because of how irresponsibly he saw her handle herself......not exactly how I want to be seen by others....whether old or not.

I know that some things are missed because there were no signs. The problem is that those things usually have symptoms that can be caught early by having the yearly checkups, but to ignore signs when they exist is NOT WISE.

BrokenCloud, I can only hope that you would take care of yourself when if it ever comes right down to the necessity.
