I didnt want to post this. I wanted to keep it to myself till i got the results. But i'm really nervous. Last time, back in 2004 when i was 34 i had a tumor (large mass) in my breast that was removed surgically and a biopsy done. It was found to be benign.

Friday before last, the day before we had to evacuate i had a mammogram. My regular doctor felt something. I was told by the radiologist that i have microcalcifications. Next thursday, the 18th, i will be having a biopsy. Not surgically, but in the office. The breast center is just starting to get back online, thats why i have to wait till then. They did want to do it that friday they found it. But im scared shitless of needles and i saw the needle they are going to insert the last time. So i refused that day. The radiologist called me on the way home wanting me to come back so they could do it. I just told her i cant today.

Anyway. I would like someone who has had a biopsy done to please explain what will happen. I know they deaden the spot twice. But i hear they stick a wire in, then a tube and an incision is done. I really want to know how the procedure is done. I dont know whats true. The nurse told me because of my issue with needles there is a possibility i will be restrained to the gurney. She wouldnt go into what happens, cause she said she has the feeling i wont show up. Now that really scares me.

If anyone has gone through this, please share your experience with me.

Right now the biopsy is scaring me a whole hell of alot more than the chance of having cancer.

I will be so grateful to hear how the biopsy was done on you.

shaking in my seat

I have not had it done either. But I have heard like bebop said they do not want you to have any pain. Try not to look at the needles. Another thing to ask for is a nurse or someone who can sit up by your head. That way you can talk to someone. Keep your head turned and be focased on something else.
They should be giving you something to calm you too. You can ask for that.
You are doing the right thing getting it taken care of.
Caught early its very curable...
All my prayers to you

Dear Chalm,

It is possible to let your Dr. request that they give you twilight sedation.

This way, you are awake but do not care what happens.

You can also request that your anxiety be handled with respect, and that having a anti-anxiety pill 'on the way' to the procedure will help.

I have had 2 biopsies (both in same place, second to give better amount) and I have anxiety issues, like I can go into panic mode, so they had extra care for me. I was quite thankful, as this set the standard for the tests to follow, which were all done under general, which put me 'out like a light'.

Your primary Dr. can help you get these orders done by the persons involved in handling your biopsy, although I hear they usually don't hurt, depending on where they are, but then again, I prepared myself as did my Dr. by realizing that everyone should be able to accomplish the procedure in a decent manner, especially me, and since I was the one who could cause a problem, we eliminated that possibility.

Please tell your Dr. you are fearful, and that restraining would be alright if you were twilight sedated or moderately sedated due to your anxiety.

Hope all goes well. We have a right to voice our concerns with Dr.s and also, to have our needs met in an appropriate manner in any situation.

We have rights as patients.

Love and Calmness,
Night

I'm going to talk to the nurse and doctor when i get there. They called me yesterday and wanted me to come in earlier than thrusday. So now i'll be going on tuesday. I was already going to take two klonopins before going. I just hope i dont make an *** out of myself and can remain calm and just get through it.

I just got home from seeing my T who talked to me about the biopsy. Trying to calm me and make me relax about it.

Then the phone rang and it was the nurse for tomorrow. She told me i couldnt take my klonopin or any type of sedative. I asked why not. She said i have to wait till im there and sign a waiver then take it in front of them. I said theres no way i can do that. I wont be able to function to get there. I started crying. Then i asked if they will have the needles already in the room, she said yes. Now im crying more. Then she said they will be restraining me cause in my records it says i've already hit a nurse and ran from getting needles. By this point im bawling. I told her i'm not going. I'm not getting it done. Whatever it is i'll just live with it or die with it. I scared her. She said she was going to speak to the doctor and call me back.

Im sorry i sound like such a wimp when it comes to needles. But i am.

When she called me back she asked if i take the klonopin every morning with my other meds. I told her my pdoc prescribed them for me to take them that way. She said okay, then go ahead and take it. But im taking two and not telling them. Then she told me they will not place the needles in the room. She said they will prep me, turn my head to the side and cover my face with a light towel. Then bring the needles in. I asked her about the restraining me and she said that decision will be made by the doctor when i get there.

I feel a little better now. Maybe i can get through this without causing problems or swinging at someone.

Send me some calm and relaxing thoughts for tomorrow morning, please. I need them bad.

I did it, made it thorugh. I didnt run, came very close to it though. And i didnt hit a nurse.

But, my god, did it hurt. It was very painful to have done. They had to give me 6 shots of laticane and i still felt pain, but i told them i could handle it. The nurse, Donna, spent most of the time laying on top of me to keep me still cause i kept jumping from the pain.

They did an incision about an inch wide and put those sticky stitches on it. It's still bleeding a tiny bit. I'm about to go change the gauze.

They said they got enough of the microcalcium deposits to run the tests on. And within two days Donna should call with the results.

I just feel a weight lifted off of me right now. Waiting for the results seems like nothing compared to what happened this morning.

Thank ya'll so much and when i find out the results i will let you know.

hugs,
chalmette

Its good news for now. The microcalcifications havent formed into cancer at this time. The nurse said that 40% of the time they gradually do. And that i will have to have mammograms done every 3 months, which may go to 6 months. They also found another tumor that is the cancerous type (i forgot the word she called it) while doing the biopsy. She said next week the radiologist and doctor will meet and discuss what to do. She said they may call me back in next week for the tumor becuase they did not do a biopsy on that. If they wanna do another biopsy (they knocking me out cold or i just aint doing it). She said if i dont hear anything from them next week that means that i will get the letter for me to come back in 3 months for more mammograms.

I want to thank ya'll so so so so so much for all your prayers and wishful thoughts for me. I know some of you have gone thorugh this and you know how painstaking it is. Without you guys' support i dont think i would have made it.

love and hugs to each and every one of you

I just read this.....sorry to hear what you were going through. I am with you....knock me completely out.....I don't want to know what's going on....just before & after.....& don't bother me inbetween.

I have had several procedures done while awake & that wasn't very ok.....but I too got through them. When I had my knee surgery, it was almost 9 months later, but when I kneeled, it was like a stabbing that went into my knee, right at a specific spot. I went back to the surgeon & he ended up giving my knee a local & poked around.....pulled out a huge knot....a suture that hadn't disolved......they tied it into so many knots, it was one huge little ball. He shows it to me & says, does this look like the culpret???? Strange how tha spot is still sensitive after 20+ years.....who would think.

The other procedures that I hate are the central lines with the IV nutrition I have had to have too many times to count. They always keep you awake for that procedure....making a small incision right by the collar bone.....then they have to insert a wire & tube into the blood vessle next to the heart.....go figure. one time they knicked my lung....they didn't realize it until after the xray they have to take & then in the middle of the night, I was surrounded by everyone waking me up & whatever happened, I don't even remember, but I had the leg wraps on my legs with the inflation stuff for days so as not to have blood clots form & I can't remember what else happened (sometimes we block out the bad).

Like Bebop...IV's are another of my problems....it would't be so bad if they could get in on the first try, but after 5 times & still no vein......I have told them to go away & unless someone knows what they are doing....leave me alone!!!! Unfortunately, it's usually because I am so dehydrated & that is usually what causes the problem in the first place.

Your vision of running topless through the Dr's office & decking a nurse.....is really a funny picture in my mind......but sure it wasn't at the time.

You are in my prayers that the next procedure won't be necessary, but if it is, that they will take care of you & put you out for the procedure......no reason to have to have pain & it seems they can't deaden your senses in that area very well.

Love,
Debbie
