There comes a time when our skin isn't what it used to be. I find that my arms, especially, and my legs and feet second, are getting really dry, almost to the point of being painful. There's no cracked skin, just really, really dry like a piece of old paper. It almost crinkles when I rub my arms!

I've tried several hand lotions from your usual stores like Target, Walgreens, etc. My question is, is there a lotion that you have found that really works, keeps working after a few minutes? It all seems to vanish on me after no more than just a couple of minutes and it leaves my skin just as dry. EEWWWW OUCH!

Baby oil after my shower doesn't work. I get "ashy" after an hour or so. I've got a pretty deep tan. Again, EEWWWW! But I guess that's what I get for always being out in the garden.

My face and scalp are still just as oily as they were when I was in high school. Can we say "Sickening"? Guess that's where all my body oil goes to.

Anyway... if anyone knows of a good body/hand lotion, what is it so I can try it. Guess I'm not aging very gracefully.

LOL I NEED plastic surgery for health reasons but the one dr I saw won't do it. He's a JERK!!

I don't like heavy creams or lotions either, but there's got to be something that I can put on my poor, dried up skin! Plastic surgery doesn't help that. Double

I'm not an older lady, but have you tried an oatmeal based lotion? Its said to help with dry skin and its symptoms really well. Or you could even try an oatmeal bath!

Tomi~

I had asked my dermatologist about this awhile back. My legs get really dry. He recommended Eucerin creme ( its heavy but works) also for the other areas that arent as dry, Dove products are best. Hope this helps

It works for me.

My husband was having a lot of trouble with his poor little bald head :-) I accidentally found a lotion, "Skin MD" http://www.skinmdnatural.com/ at my local drugstore and he really likes it.

I've found that lotions with Shea Butter in them work really well. I especially like Lubriderm with Shea and Cocoa butters. It isn't greasy and its effects seem to last a while.

Let us know what works best.

Perna's link reminded me, the idea is to keep as much moisture in as possible. Using the lotion right after a bath or shower gives good results.

WOW!! I have a plethora (fancy word! LOL) of recourses to try!

I used Eucerin on one of my grandsons when he was a baby. Can't remember if I liked the feel of it or not. May have to try it.

I just threw away a bottle of Lubriderm because it went rancid so quickly! Also, didn't have any smell to it. Maybe that's why it smelt rancid. EEWWW I'm old enough to have a rancid smell of my own, so no thank you!

An oatmeal bath? Thank goodness I don't have a bathtub! It doesn't sound very apatizing (pun intended). LOL I know oatmeal is supposed to be good for your skin, though. I think the Lubriderm I just threw away had oatmeal in it.

Is CeraVe Moisturizing Cream an OTC product or is it an Rx? Can't remember ever seeing it on the shelves.

Perna, I'll look up that website and see what it has to offer. Did you shine hubby's head with it? Give it a good buffing? LOL I like guys bald heads when they're shiny. Go figure! J will never go bald. He's a fur mat!

Clinique sounds good, but expensive? Sounds yummy!

Back before she turned my stomach, I tried Dove bath shampoo because Oprah recommended it. She must not have any body odor or stink to the high heavens! LOL I did absolutley nothing for me. That's not to say that I won't try the lotion, though. I hope they have a nicely scented one. I like to smell good.

Anybody tried Nivea? I get tempted to get a trial size bottle but always resist for some reason. It just ... IDK ... looks hoaky? Never mind what's inside! LOL

Thanks, you guys! Someone's going to be making some money off of me in the coming weeks. I'm just tired of rustling like a piece of dry paper.

LOL You and I are in the same boat. I know I've smelled cocoa butter before but I can't remember if I liked it or how it smelled!

I've smelled Nivia and it smells good. It's not greasy. I just don't know how long the effects last. I don't have the inclination or the time to keep putting lotion on myself. My poor arms look like a piece of tin foil that someone really crumpled up and then managed to open back up. I guess that will never change because of my age. I just don't want it to FEEL the way it does. Gosh! My arms look like my mother's did! We can't have that, now can we?

If you haven't been checked lately, this 'mature' age is time to have the thyroid checked to see how it's functioning. Dry skin that can't be replenished with moisturizers is one of my signs that my thyroid is not functioning well.

My favorite lotion is Jergen's regular old fashioned cherry-almond scented. Non-greasy and lightly scented. It feels really good to me.

I think everyone's tastes in body creams and lotions is different.....one easy solution to some drying skin is to drink more water! Our bodies don't process as they did in younger days....drinking more water may very well help in replenishing ourselves from the inside out.

Another thought, have you had your blood tested for Type 2 diabetes? If it seems all of a sudden your skin has become dry and itchy more than normal, that is one of the signs of diabetes. Not trying to bring doom and gloom here, just remembering when my skin turned that way, I found out I was diabetic.

As far as body lotions go I really swear by the Oil of Olay lotions. I have body lotion and specific face creams too and they work wonders on me. (like anything could....oh please!! )

I think glycerin-based ointment type moisturizers are really good for problem dryness. My dermatologist told me that lotions that are water-based are actually drying. The glycerin-based moisturizers don't have water in them and really work. I use Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream. It's called a cream, but I consider it an ointment. Creams are usually white and ointments are clear. It is worth its weight in gold, and sells for a good price at Target. Neutrogena has intensive moisturizing products for body and face too. Look for the word "glycerin" to avoid the water-based products that dry you out.
http://www.neutrogena.com/ProductsDe...oductLineID=12

One that is great for feet is another glycerin product from Burt's Bees, called "Coconut Foot Creme." I put it on overnight and in the morning, my feet are so much better. And it smells good too.

I've gotten some good ideas for new products to try from this thread.

yeah, that stuff is all great, but the first thing you have to do to smoothe out your skin is remove the dead skin cells that are on your lower legs especially, the feet, the arms, upper and lover, top of hands, and the face as well, as the neck.

Only thing seperate your hand and neck from body products.

There are lots of fairly inexpensive exfoliating products on the market, but you want one that will work, and that means you can use less and get your dollars worth.

Complete sets, with exfoliating face wash, pads that use peptides and proper acids to dislodge the old, worthless skin cells that need to get off the skin ... so that you are down to the real skin, cleared of the old, where it will be soft, supple and radiant, which is what you want, and also, to rid the old skin clogging up every pore, so that a real good moisturizer and skin tightener can really work, be absorbed in to the fresh new skin, that drinks up the moisture and corrective creams.

So, get thee to a detmotologist, or be brave and try a skin care line that has been a favorite of many.

Here are some brand that make skin care so easy, men and women use it all the time, for it's convenience, value and --hey it works!

Philosophy is perhaps the cheapest that encompasses everything!

They have the best cleanser, exfoliating pads already in a jar, so you take 'one' and use it on face, elbows, and upper hands.

It works.

When your face has been properly cleansed, and exfoliated, your next step of adding moisturizer and before that, a serum, will be absorbed directly into the skin.

No waste, as it does happen when you slather stuff on a face that has not been properly cleared of old yucky skin cells, at least Philosophy turns over the cells, shows the new growth, and allows their moisturizer, after their serum, to make a dramatic and real difference.

There is a product they have you can use once or twice a month to pick up the slack if you haven't been exfoliating and you are in your late 30's and over. You can pick between the oxygen or another mask-exfoliating-cleanser-old skin lifter offer, lol.

The whole deal, to get everything - will coat you about $100. maybe even more.

The promise I tell you is this, you will have it for 6 months, you will recover your youthful appearance in the skin, and remove all the dead cells, so that your products aren't wasted, going on top of dead skin.

I know of many other lines, but this one has the peel you can do at home once or twice a month, the oxygen peel, or vitamin c peel, which is harmless - the words scare us.. but it's actually fun to do, men and women, and it sets a clean canvas for other light products that can be your daily regime.

So, go to QVC, or Sephora, but a special where you get something for free with purchase, and clear up the cloudy, pastey skin in - i swear - a noticable difference in a couple of days. Keep going for three months, 3 or 4 steps, depending on how you schedule, and you will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your skin again.

There are also wonderful lotions for your neglected skin on your legs, get a good one, not creams that lay on top, with a thick molecular structure it cannot penetrate.

Do the face first, it's winter time. Work on the legs too, but start exfoliating them with a battery operated brush and GOOD cleanser cream for exfoliating.
So when you put on a moisturizer, it will penetrate and give you baby soft skin...not lay on top, wasting, as your skin is clogged with old stuff,,,ick!

hey, I'm a skin specialist, and trying to help here, so don'y kill the messenger.

There are other product lines to try alos that do work:

bliss, fresh, Philosophy (their skin care line is an exceptional value)
Dr. Denise (from Yale, I believe)
Dr. N. Perricone (wrote the wrinkle cure, and other books, very good, from Harvard)
Clarins (from France)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
that's all for now.
trust me or do not.
I've had chemo and rad, for 6 weeks, wore me out right?
my skin, with no cell turnover thanks to chemo, and other chemo issues, my skin is looking pretty, pretty good!
A combo of all of the above has been helping me...but you should start with one - philosophy, because I like the price point for what you get!
xoxox
Thanks for this!
I had really dry skin due to diabetes and tried lots of different things. What has worked the absolute best for me is Curel - ultra healing. It's fabulous.
SeptemberMom,
The only thing I haven't seen mentioned here for dry skin is good old Vaseline. The soles of my feet were badly cracked and dry for years. I tried every foot moisturizer on the market and none worked. Then a manicurist told me to try using Vaseline every night--slather it on when you go to bed. It's done wonders! I have also used it as an all over body moisturizer. I apply it all over at bedtime or anytime I'll just be hanging around the house, doing assignments, etc. It works great for me. And cheap!
I use coconut oil that I get at the health food store... It works well for me... I don't get that greasy feel at all and I know a lot of other people that use it as well.
My favorites are natural products with few to no harmful chemicals. It's a good idea to skip lotions with alcohol in them, since that dries the skin. My top faves are Burts Bees carrot(they also have a few other options besides carrott) and Whole Foods Market sells a brand 365, and they make a good body lotion. I tried it for the first time today. It felt heavy when I rubbed it in, but it didn't leave me greasy. I put it on my face too! I love natural products
You can also moisturize from the inside as well. Eating 1-2 Tablespoons of a good oil (cold pressed: olive, flaxseed, etc) a day will go a long way with your skin as well as plenty of water.
Odd how I stumbled on this....*as i've just finished applying my lotion*..lol.
When i used to reside in Northern Nevada, with the harsh winters there, my skin cried for help. During that time, I discovered bout 3 different creams that were a Godsend....
Although I can't recall the place of purchase, my best guess is either at Target, Walmart..or possibly even K-Mart.
The first isn't exactly a cream...more like a jelled-vasilline like base. It's called "BagBalm". Comes in a short, square tin, dark green in color. Has a picture of a milkin cow on it....lol....It was originally developed for the cure of cracked utters on the cows from over-milking. Once discovered how fantastic it is, it had been distributed for human use.
When I used to work out in the northern winter elements (back in my day), my hand's would crack along the quicks of my fingernails=MAJOR pain. I applied the balm to the cracks just before bed, slip on sum light-weight rubber gloves (hold in the moisture n prevent escape of "greasy" onto myself or bed while sleeping). By morning, cracks were healed, and hands were good again. The stuff is amazing! Fair priced..and LASTS FOREVER! The ONLY drag about it is that it is GREASY like vasalline. It is a wonderment for any minor exterior injuries.
The other is called "DrySkin Treatment Cream". (It is the generic of Eucerin). Developed by Perrigo. It isHypo Allergenic, Dermatologist tested. Fragrance n color-free. FANTASTIC STUFF. Non-greasy, light to the feel.
I love this stuff. This is what I usually use when in need of something.
The name-brand "Eucerin" cream is great stuff, as well. Same as above, but is costly. However, if you cannot find the others, its price is well worth the results provided. When my skin used to over-dry, I'd apply that and its like applying instant relief...AHHHHHH!
There is one other, Curel...a well known brand. It's a good cream, and works well for minor skin issues, but it's nothing in comparison to the other's I've mentioned.
Hope this helps...Happy Skin to you!
Ditto on the Bag Balm. I think you can get it at a variety of stores. My neck of the woods carries it at Fred Meyer, among other places. Several others have mentioned Burt's Bees, which I'm a huge fan of. I'm a big fan of anything with natural fats and oils, though. Granted, I'm not old enough to have skin needing extra TLC, but I do have sensitive skin and have struggled finding the right balance between gentle and moisturizing.
