My company got bought out again in December, and on our first day with the new company, my entire department found out we were getting laid off on April 6th.

This is the only job I've ever had. I never thought this would happen. The company that bought us is a Fortune 500 company. They said they were cutting costs in some areas which is why they got rid of us. The people that are taking our places are already doing our jobs, and they aren't doing them very well.

It feels like losing a family.

I'm sorry that you're loosing your job. It sucks and it's always hard. Unfortunately it often happens in buyout situations - the company doing the aquisition is always looking for ways to save money. I've been through a bunch of mergers / Acquisitions and there are almost always layoffs.

Take some time to grieve the loss of your job, then dust off your resume, and get out there looking.

Man it'd be nice to have a good resume, but I have no idea how to make one for a call center position. I'd really like to have a job where I didn't have to answer phones all day. I love helping people, but phones make me go crazy.
Thanks for this!

I believe there is a local workforce development (employment assistance center) in your area that can work with you to build a resume conduct job searches / etc.

We have one here in Southern California that is part of the State of California EDD.

I used their services after being laid off.

Also, a headhunter or employment agency will help you create / revise your resume.

I hope this helps! Good luck and please keep us posted!

As much as you didn't want to lose this job, it sounds as if it was far from a dream position! So take a raw deal & treat it like an opportunity.

As Rose says, there are Job centers & agencies that will help you with resumes and such. I'm sorry you're having to go through this, but you'll probably go through several jobs--it's the new trend. Brush up your skills, and build on every opportunity. Strategizing to get your next job has become an important skill in itself.

Understood, Roadie. I didn't expect to keep this job forever, but I didn't think it would be so soon that I'd be losing you, you know?

Use your job title so, if you were customer service put, that you were a rep. List the various tasks you did and skills you used, web use, email, multitasking, attention to detail etc. Make your skills the focus and display answering phones was simply your medium for communication.

Find a job listing that you want to apply for (or read a sample description if a job not listed) and customize that list to what is needed, demonstrate you have skills required and beyond answering a phone and reading a script.

Thanks cocoa. I've been needing to update my resume. Right now I just have what I do as opposed to skills I used.

I'm not sure what topic to post this under but, I was so aggravated today. I went for an interview supposedly for something I wasn't qualified to do. I talked briefly to the interviewer on the phone asking if he could tell me about the position. He just said nonchalantly, "It's no big deal", just come between 1-4, and I don't care if you dress up or not". Ok, I thought, he was rushing me off the phone. I found it on CareerBuilder. The job was Part-time at a place called "Carolina Ballet". All the ad said was "customer service" position. When I got there, he asked me if I've ever been to theater, or ballet, or arts. I replied, "No, I haven't". Then he said I needed sales experience, it is a very competitive job, again I wasn't told this beforehand,a and that I needed to know something about theater at least to know how they worked. I replied aggressively to him that I wish he would of told me this before I went down there. All he could say is he apologized, I'm sorry. I always ask questions before, so I don't waste anyone's time, well he wasted mine. With gas being almost $4 a gallon here, I even had to borrow money to get to the interview from a neighbor, that's embarrassing in itself. I think he acted so unprofessionally towards me, I wish I could've spoken to his boss. I want to give up looking for a job, and just give up on myself, life.

(((Deborah))) Try not to let one bad seed ruin it for you. I have to admit I'd be discouraged after that if I was in your shoes, but I know eventually I'd have to keep looking. He definitely sounds like a jerk, and I wouldn't doubt it if he was the reason the position was open in the first place.

Ebatts,

It's not just the 1 job incident, it's everything. I've lived in NC for 12 years now, and nothing is working out for me here, I just want to give up. I've been having alot of bad luck with things. Alot of bad memories from my ex- husband, knowing he still lives in NC too. The problem is, moving is not an option for me. Yes, that interviewer did act like a complete jerk.
