I assume it's because the interviewer didn't think I demonstrated their bogus "13 characteristics." They seem to only want to hire people that want (or say they want) to make Chipotle their career. They don't seem to have any tolerance for people like me who are dead broke and just need the money, regardless of whether or not I'm capable of doing the work. They don't like introverts either. Doesn't matter if you're pleasant and hard-working, you have to constantly exhibit ridiculously high energy and positivity. At least in the interviewing process I guess, because no one behind the counter is that extraordinarily chipper.

Well I am with you on that... it seems like the employment picture is still not good enough that companies don't have enough applicants and can drop this kind of thing (which fairly is a way to reduce the number of qualified candidates that they have to pick from).

I hopefully haven't mentioned it before in this thread but have you considered going to a temp agency? I had good luck with that when no one would hire me. I mean sometimes they just need a body because they get paid a commission if you show up. They might make you take a test or something but usually it isn't too bad.

The problem is that I haven't worked in four years (I'm 23) and haven't been in school since 2015. I had to drop out of school two years ago because of depression and haven't done anything since. So here I am looking for a job with very little experience and no degree. I'm starting to feel like no matter what I do, there will always be more attractive candidates with more experience. This is really killing me because I have student loan payments breathing down my neck and I literally only have $50 in my checking account. Everyone keeps telling me to write a resume but that won't change my past. The jobs I'm applying to are minimum wage jobs in food service and retail, and those job listings get well over 100 other applicants. There's nothing I can do to make myself stand out from that many people. There just isn't.

I'm so tired of people telling me that I have great attributes and to "stay positive." I know I can do the work and the employers probably know I can do the work too, but they're never going to pass over someone with more work and college experience for someone like me, who hasn't done anything in four years. The longer I go without work, the more toxic I become. The sad thing is I didn't have any trouble finding work in 2012. I got several interviews after just looking for two months, and multiple job offers. Now that I'm 23 and dealing with depression and a lack of job experience, finding work seems impossible.

I haven't posted here in over a year, but this job search is killing me and I needed to vent.
I'm sorry I can't give you a job. But have you contacted the Department Of Rehabilitation? They could get you a job or free training for a job that pays better. You could also go into a temp agency and get a job there, and look for permanent work while you work as a temp.

It seems like most employers want 'energetic' employees with positive attitudes, which is difficult to pull off when depressed and hopeless.

If I was in your situation, I'd enroll in a short program at community college. They often have 9 to 24 month provrams for medical technicians (eg ultrasound tech), which may be in demand depending on the area of the country you live in.

You'd get:
Job placement
Deferrment of student loans
Loans to cover living expenses

It's been years since I've been in undergraduate college, but I remember I could borrow a good bit above the cost of tuition to pay rent and utilities. You might also be able to get food stamps.

Granted, no one needs more student loans but 12 months at a community college wouldn't be too much of a trade off. And once your feeling better and settled, maybe you could finish your degree down the road.

The pay seems quite high for that level of education:
Accredited Ultrasound Technician Schools in New Jersey ? Ultrasound Technician

Good luck to you!

Sorry it's the feeling of rejection over and over again that can be so hard on the already depressed. I think a short break in applying might help. I went through this also. I still am unemployed. There is a program you can look into though called DVR Developmental Vocational re-employment. Be easy on yourself this is not a normal job market. The UN-emplyment rate goes by how many are receiving UC- Benifits not how many are unemployed it's much higher than what the number shows.
