So I got an email from a new client who wants to know if I could complete a submission to the National Science Foundation by January 8th. Basically I would have 30 days to get it done. Less than that really because I would need them to review it. It's a brand new client. I don't know what kind of prep work they have done or information they have available on their project. I haven't met who the point person will be on the project. I'm not even sure if they have completed all the necessary registrations with grants.gov, etc. which take about a month on their own and are required to submit a grant application.
I'm torn because I really would like to have an NSF grant on my resume, but I also don't like signing up to do work that will be rushed. In the past I've spent a minimum of three months preparing for federal grant opportunities...not one month. I'm also concerned that my MI will get in the way, as it has been lately too. Can you let them know that 1 month is a really short time frame for an NSF grant proposal, then ask about their prep work before you decide?

Okay, I've been going back and forth with the client. I am really interested in submitting to the National Science Foundation, I am just very nervous that the client has not prepared enough aspects of their project to be ready for this submission. It doesn't sound like they have very much prepared, which means I'm going to have to get them to do a lot of homework before I can do MY work. And it's going to be about whether or not they are willing to do that work.
I guess I should just pose it that way. We can get this done but you are going to have to do some homework so I can get this all together. Seesaw __________________ What if I fall? Alright, I'm reviewing these requirements and I just don't think this guy has his ducks in a row to be ready to apply for this funding cycle. I don't feel comfortable attempting to do this application in basically 4 weeks when he's going to have to use at least two of those weeks to prepare a detailed project description of 15 pages, with citations, that I'm going to then have to review, edit, and send back to him very likely for more information.
I hate to pass it up, but these applications typically take 2-3 months at best because they require so much detail. Seesaw __________________ What if I fall? Oh, my dear, but what if you fly?
