Getting sleep was a problem from the beginning for me and continued through the decades! So this is something I'm really emphathizing over with you, gma. An herbalist friend introduced me to the Bach formulations, which are floral essences. The main commercial line are alcohol-based, but with effort can be obtained online from their home in Germany in a non-alcohol formulary. Their product Rescue Remedy is just what it sounds like--an answer for when you're at your wit's end. When I've gone 3 or 4 nights with little or no sleep, I'll use a few drops of this and can count on a good night's rest.

It doesn't knock me out, and I'm not drugged the next day. I can use it two nights in a row, but the third night it doesn't work. Like everything else, its effect differs for everyone. My best friend is knocked out for 24-hrs by a single drop, but she's very drug-sensitive. For others it doesn't do a thing. http://www.bachflower.com/

Wish I'd been there. You can't buy that key. Can't even rob a jewelry store for it. Your simple act of accepting it is symbolic of thousands of other actions of not taking a drink or of going to a meeting, avoiding friends who use, doing whatever it took to put together another 5 clean minutes in those 18 months.

Overall it doesn't mean a whole lot and guarantees even less, but that act of their giving it to you and your accepting it from them, that symbolic act in the present moment it took place, means everything. It means hope made real. It means faith realized. It's all anyone ever needs to know about what a man--or mankind--is possible of. Or woman/womankind.

Yep, wish I'd been there.

18 days sober. Feels like it's been much longer than that. Today was a bad day, poor sleep, bad dreams, awful events at work. Trying to keep my head up right now and not fall back on old habits, they lead to a worse place.

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if this thread is only for those suffering from alcohol or drug addiction? I'm in a 12 step program (Overeaters Anonymous) and wouldn't mind checking in here.

It feels like 18 long days and only in all the worst, longest ways. Yep. You're near the darkest times. Looking in my journal, I see 18-23 as Very Gloomy. Don't remember after all this time how bad that was but sounds bad :

Really sorry you're having to go through this, and honestly Plotonian ... if there were a shortcut I would tell you.

Complete absence of cravings. Perhaps not coincidentally, there is no liquor to be had where I work. Whatever the case, I am happily rid of the little devil on my shoulder. It's clear to me it's largely a psychological ailment I have, rarely physical. So at the moment, I feel comfortable calling alcoholism not a disease but a recurring affliction. Semantics maybe but I would be embarrassed to call what I have a disease. A disease is often something you can't cure, whereas it's quite obvious that obsession with a drink can be dealt with, as a common cold can be dealt with.

Well hello everyone. I am 23 days sober today. I have noticed small accomplishments since we've quit drinking [my fiance and I.] Such as... the house is a lot cleaner! The dishes are done! There is money in the bank! The cabinets are stocked with food. Not as much recycling to pick up after, that is always a plus. We smoke less AND we are losing weight. Finally I want to add we have been more physically active and hell, the sex is a lot better sober. Let that be motivation for everyone trying to quit!

slept well and soundly. I am clean and happy with this. A bag would give me a night of pleasure, but I have no need for that bag. I am enjoying my life without a bag today. I look forward to this day.

tks.

Three weeks spent without intoxication. Hard to believe I've gone this far. As bad as the cravings have been at times, I haven't given in. Patting myself on the back right now.

ladyjane4rent, I apologize that I didn't locate the 3-wk chip for you a few days back when you marked your date. This is "an occasion" and I commend the two of you for standing together and supporting each other in this heroic effort. You are blessing your relationship in a way that can only endow each other.
