So I met with my psych today (who already knows i have substance abuse problems) and I've been previously prescribed adderall for ADHD. It helps however I've had problems with abusing adderall in the past (I'm now taking it as directed, but the people in my life were worried that I'd go back to abusing it) so I asked my psych about other meds. He prescribed me Vyvanse. I was just wondering if it's a good decision to take it. Does Vyvanse have abuse potential and will it cause the same nasty side effects that adderall does?

I would be careful Matt. I have never heard of this drug, but found this, "Vyvanse® is a federally controlled substance (CII) because it can be abused or lead to dependence. Keep in a safe place to prevent misuse and abuse." keep talking to your sponsor if you have one, but asking here was a very smart move on your part.

Vyvanse is like Adderall's big bad ugly uncle. It's a scheduled drug like emwell2 mentioned and is very much popular with people in active addiction.

I was in rehab in 2011 with a lady who went to jail for forging prescriptions for it. So um yeah....not good news.

Please be extra careful. Thanks,

moogs

idk much about add/adhd drugs, but from my experience with friends and such, it seems that they are just prescribing "legal" street drugs through pharmaceutical companies. to me, this is their way of cutting out cartels and street pushers - mainly so they can gain profit. sick, sad world we live in.

i found this link, Vyvanse Uses, Dosage, Side Effects & Warnings - Drugs.com maybe it can help you figure some things out. not sure. i can't really understand much from this site, but it is a controlled substance and has potential for abuse and dependency.

thank you for attempting to find answers and keep your sobriety.
Thanks for this!

If the drug is really that bad, why the heck is Matt's Doc prescribing it in the 1st place? Please listen to Moogie and be careful with it.

Theoretically vyvanse has less abuse potential. It's an inactive prodrug that is activated by your digestive process and doesn't provide any stimulant drug if broken, crushed etc. Obviously you can still abuse it if you take enough orally, but that's the only mechanism that one can use to get "high" off of it.

Vyvanse is Unmetabolized dextroamphetamine so it has to be metabolized in the liver from lisdexamfetamine which you can't get high on when snorted.

You can crush the pill to make it instant release lisdexamfetamine but it will still have to be processed in the liver.

I might try vyvanse or go to 108mg concerta so 24mg ritalin 3-4x a day. Vyvanse I don't know about the dosage.

My kid's psychiatrist prescribes it because it has much less abuse potential. Can't be used to manufacture drugs. Only has it's stimulant affect if swallowed. Adderall, however, n be snorted etc.

I just recently switched to vyvanse from Adderall for the once a day dosing schedule (ZI was taking it twice a day and I kept forgetting the second dose). I've had a good experience with it. For me, it's "smoother" than Adderall, I don't really feel it kick in, it's more like I suddenly realize I'm concentrating, productive, less hyper and I've gotten tons of stuff done. I had some nausea and headaches initially, but they went away. No other side effects. I've been on stimulants since I was 8 (I'm 30) and for me vyvanse has had the least amount of side effects than any other one. And I've been on most of them...

Make sure you actually have ADHD. Generally the people who actually have it absolutely hate taking it. Yes it definitely helps us with paying attention, but it's freakin speed why wouldn't it... If you have ADHD it calms you down. Everyone has trouble concentrating and literally anyone can get a script if they really wanted. For me, it is literally impossible to concentrate. It's like there's and eternal force pulling me out of my chair. IMO, giving someone amphetamines because they have trouble in school isn't exactly right. If you really do have ADHD then that just means you have a different way of learning, not disabled. And if you have abused the drug in the past you should not be prescribed it again. That's idiotic and no good doctor would prescribe you it.

Oh my goodness, do not take Vyvance if you're trying to stay clean. When I was 19 I convinced some doctors that I was narcoleptic and they started giving me that stuff. That's what they prescribe for NARCOPLEPSY. Pretty strong stuff. For me it was not as strong as Adderall, it actually was just strong enough to make me crave Adderall itself. I mention this because of your past Adderall issue. I would not recommend. There's a med out called Strattera that's for ADHD. Supposed to be non-stimulant. Maybe try that.

Vyvanse is a stimulant/amphetamine. Its exactly the same as adderall. All these stimulants are just "Legal cocaine" but stronger!!! Please-if you're considering trying any of these "ADHD" meds-DONT DO IT!!! Once you start you will never be the same. I have been physically dependent on adderall for 4 years now & trying that pill for the first time is the biggest regret of my life & I Would do anything to go back & change that because it has forever changed me psychologically I'm now diagnosed with Dissociative/depersonalization disorder, extreme depressive disorder, anxiety, panic attack disorder, manic depression, OCD, bipolar, & borderline personality disorder. Above all, this drug has consumed my life & stolen my identity. Read my forum in ADHD-"addicted to adderall". Think about it, theyre generically named "Amphetamine Salts" HELLOOO!!! Ring a bell?? Yepp, thats right, METHAMPHETAMINE. Adderall is the legal form of meth. Don't believe me? Look it up. Please please please get out while you still can & if you've never tried it-DO NOT! I know that everyone has a purpose in life, maybe this is mine-to save others from this "glamorized stimulant." I apologize for my strong emotions in this post (yepp, that's the adderall!) notice its 3AM?? I didn't! Point proven.

Methamphetamine HCL is for severe ADHD and narcolepsy.

It's branded with the name "Desoxyn".

all i see is people trying to justify vyvanse. if you are an addict, there are other ways to deal with your adhd/add than going right to drugs, try figuring it out rather than just jumping right to the drugs... i can't stand people sometimes.

i have a problem though, i won't take any medications, i believe i can figure it out myself. drugs to me, just make us lazy and i would much rather face my problems/issues than sit down and medicate myself and whine about it - the problems/the drugs. get over yourself, live your life and figure it out. life is too short to spent it burnt out.

What about severe ADHD..

I might change to vyvanse because it lasts longer than concerta and he won't increase the concerta because I have the schizophrenia label..

If you truly have ADHD, then treating it is very important, and stimulants are generally the most effective option.

You probably should have your usage rationed / supervised by a pharmacy.

I am an addict and they prescribed Vyvanse for me; it didn't do a damn thing for me (plus, it wasn't covered by insurance and it cost $$$$). I told the doctor I didn't want it anymore and they stopped prescribing it for me.

I'm discovering that it depends on the alter that's up front. We're not all ADHD.

IMO, Adderall is much more addictive than Vyvanse. You can only take Vyvanse orally, and it doesn't have much abuse potential. I was prescribed Adderall and now I'm on Vyvanse. It feels cleaner, less stimulating. Vyvanse feels less like a drug, if you know what I mean. YMMV but I think it's very similar to Adderall.

There are non-habit forming treatment options for ADHD/ADD.

Pharmacological treatments include: Wellbutrin, Straterra, and Intuniv.
Behavioral therapies, as with other mental health disorders, can also be quite effective.

Certainly stimulants tend to have the best sucess, but of course it's a risk-benefit thing to consider.

Vyvanse was fine for awhile me. Know I can secretly finish a 70mg 30 day bottle in 7 days!! I'm not a speed freak, but I have Ulcertive Colitis and the Humira knocks me out at work as my job as an editor I'm sober from booze since 2008, but fear I am the cliched pill popper with an excuse. The guilt is eating me alive. That's my experience. I just turned 50
