Try breathing, telling your mind NO you're wrong, keep your hands and mind occupied simultaneously (instrument, swimming, gym, etc) and my biggest is learning to let go.

There is a very good chance they will diminish with time until they no longer create anxiety. I'm guessing they are more noticeable as your anxiety level increases? I'm not really sure of their relationship... anxiety and intrusive/unwanted/disturbing thoughts. I do know they have a relationship though Some of them are probably real/true thoughts from deep within us... we are humans after all. Some of them seem to be just some perverse crossed wires thing. I can tell you that I rarely have them anymore. Do they frighten you? Make you think you're crazy or bad?

It sounds like you are at the point I am. They get so annoying and intrusive that you can't even listen to people talk because all you can hear is that voice? Ignore ignore ignore! I love going to work when I am like this because I'm productive. I keep my head down and just do my work. The problem is when I am at home up all night alone

My intrusive thoughts have gone away mostly in the past for half a year but now they are back. So I would say its a possibility but im not sure about them being gone permanently.

I doubt they ever go away for good. Certain times of the year trigger mine. Holidays are awful. Stuff comes rushing into my head and it's like a crate of flying monkeys were released into my brain.

Thoughts are nothing if we don't act on them and we know that they aren't something we have to keep around. I know its easier said than done because I find myself having intrusive thoughts that steal me from the present moment all the time and a lot of times. I can't say I am proud of the thoughts a lot of them are violent or sexual fantasies, sometimes paranoia, but I just because something pops into my mind it doesn't mean I have to keep the thought or act on it. I am hoping though that my doctor can get me on the right medication for intrusive thoughts because it is a symptom of my OCD and anxiety.

I think OCD can cause those thoughts too.

The intrusive thoughts that pop into my head are memories. And, the memories are wreckage of the past. So, I can't consider them nothing. They are real, they happened to me and they hurt. It takes all of my energy to distract myself

I understand. Unfortunately if I stop taking meds after a couple of months the intrusive thoughts come back.

I don't think I will get cured but oh well, that's how it is.

Meditation helps a great deal too.

I hate my intrusive thoughts...things you just don't want to even have run through your mind. It makes you feel dirty. I hate it. It's like living with a dead body that won't go away. Fortunately it's not all the time, but it's often enough to really weigh on you.

Hello. When I told the CYW that helps me at my school, she said that saying "stop" isn't a good thing to do when having intrusive thoughts. I don't remember her exact reasoning, but it was something along the lines saying that you are getting mad at your thoughts and not really "riding it out". Like, if a bus is about to hit you, you don't just stand there and say "stop" repeatedly. You run out of the way. Kinda the same of your thoughts. If your thoughts the bus, saying "stop" isn't actually going to stop the thoughts. I usually think of something else in my moment of panic about this.

Anyways, I understand what you are saying, because I did exactly that, but the CYW at my school told me it isn't a good thing to do, so I try to not to do that. She says "go away" is a lot better than "stop". Again, I don't remember exactly what she said, but.

I learned it in DBT And my therapist encourages me to use it when I have intrusive thoughts and urges.

I hope you find something that helps you.

FWIW I had them over 30 years ago (anxiety rather than aggression) and they've disminished with time and meds, as George says. Time can be a good healer.
Thanks for this!

Very true Little Cat,
Over the years, my intrusive thoughts have become less powerful. They only seem to gain strength at certain times of the year....Christmas holidays for example or when something else triggers them. Sometimes it will be a dream or a song or movie. If I'm out of sorts, who knows what might pop into my head. Sometimes feels like a cage of flying monkeys.

Whenever your stress levels increase, anxiety symptoms will flare. That just seems to be the way it is with anxiety. But as soon as you feel it coming on, try to take some nice deep breaths and make an effort to slow yourself down. A little self-talk like "I need to chill right now" can go a long way. The process of getting to know how your nervous system works, can take awhile. Just connecting with others like this is such a,great thing. Keep moving through it!
